Is it normal for babies to wake up screaming? Whenever he wakes up from a nap or in the morning, or in the night, it's the end of the world. He had a short phase of waking up happier a food few months back but now we're back to the all out screaming. There's none of this waking up and playing/babbling in his cot - it's 'I'm awake, I'll scream'

Oh no, that doesn't sound nice for either of you :(

My ds is also 9 montgs old and he wakes up happy. He will sometimes shout for me but not cry.

My mum has told me that I woke up crying when I was a baby, I still really don't like waking up so I guess people are just different.

I think ds1 woke up and cried after daytime naps. My memory is getting foggy (even though he's only 4yo). Dd2 is more variable - she is always happy first thing in the morning and sometimes after a daytime nap. After some daytime naps - usually the afternoon one - she can be a proper grumps.

My dd is 7.5 m and totally variable! Some days she just wakes up on the wrong side of the bed crying and is grumpy til her next nap, sometimes shes really sunny! She did go through a phase at 5m of screaming when she woke everytime, I was told its common in separation anxiety which hits around 5m and again at 9m so maybe it's that with your ds?

My DS is 14mo now and STILL wakes up crying. Hmm

Could it be anything to do with not getting enough sleep? DD might wake up screaming at 5.30am, but if she then sleeps for another hour or so after half an hour of settling her she'll wake up and chat to herself the next time...
