Can't do this every day

My dd is 4.5 weeks old and this is our first week on our own since dp went back to work. The first day was great but she has since stopped sleeping. She is awake all day and really fussy. Nothing I do is right, she will settle for a few minutes before crying again. I've tried everything, she hates the sling, pram, car seat play mat, being held, being rocked, being fed, being put down. Tried white noise and fresh air. She is crying again within minutes. She doesn't seem in pain but is quite a gassy baby and has started spitting up a bit after I feed her this week. Not sure if this is relevant.

She's also had thrush for over two weeks now and I have to wake her after feeds for her medicine which doesn't help. It doesn't even seem to be working.

Today I took her out in the pram, she slept lightly for about half an hour but woke whenever I stopped moving and then cried all the way home. She's been awake since half six but doesn't sleep long at night now. She just started to drop off during a feed but the fucking cat woke her up with his screaming. I keep crying and am losing patience. I've been trying to phone my mum to come over to give me a break but she isn't answering. I thought newborns needed sleep. I don't know what to do. 4 hours until dp gets home.

I have a couple of slings but they haven't worked since she's been like this, she settles better in them with dp.

She had a very small tongue tie which was snipped at two weeks, it really improved feeds but like I say, perhaps latch still needs work.

Will try the getting out in the pram to help her sleep idea. She used to fall asleep so easily! DP said he will take her out when he gets home if still unsettled.

My mum has just gone, not long to go now. Really can't wait for the weekend!

For the wind-burps & farts(Sorry to be bluntGrin) When mine were tiny Infacol did nothing & that was what the HV recommended!! If no joy with infacol try Gripe Water-can`t remember who made it but is available in all major chemists & some supermarkets too!!Smile

Do NOT get Daktarin Cream and Daktarin Oral Gel muddled up - they are NOT the same.

nilby - OP said she hates the sling

She is waking because she stirs in her sleep and notices she isn't in your arms !

Remember she can't see far - she is relying on her sense of touch and smell to feel safe. When she can't feel you she doesn't know why you have gone - she has evolved to cry when that happens so that someone will pick her up and make her safe again.

It's tiring but the sling is your best friend - once asleep if you keep moving she will stay asleep - also she needs to get used to being in the sling on you

Alternatively if she falls asleep don't try to put her down - just stay sitting with her asleep - it won't last forever I promise but better she sleeps an you keep your feet up for now !

I found the sling takes getting used to - take her for a long walk in it so she gets comfy ....
