How often do you bathe your baby?

Ds is 10 wks old and I bathe him every other day. He doesn't really have a routine - I try to get him to sleep every couple of hours and he feeds between every 1.5 to 3 hrs, and he sleeps in his Moses basket with us wherever we are in the house. So no bedtime routine either.

Should I be giving him a bath every day? What does everyone else do?

At that age: I was bathing him every two days and I used to do it in the morning, right after my own shower.

These days (14 months) he has a bath most nights as part of a bedtime routine but occasionally goes without if either of us is very tired and i want to hurry things along.

My 9 week old has a bath about twice a week. I think it dries their skin out if you bath them too much. I normally only use baby wash once a week. Sometimes less.

When DS was small we bathed him when there was a poo explosion but otherwise only once or twice a week.
I couldn't bath him on my own very well (I have mobility issues) so needed help when DH was around.
I would do whatever you feel comfortable with.

I don't think babies need bathing everyday if you don't want to do it. They don't get sweaty like adults and their skin is very delicate.

i also didn't have a bedtime routine at 10 weeks. It seemed a bit contrived for someone who was sleeping for max 4 hours and at all different times of the day.

MoneyMug · 29/09/2013 10:38

I don't have a bed time routine either. He stays in the living room with me until I go to bed. I didn't do a bedtime routine with my older DD until she was older. I don't think it matters too much at this age.

Thanks! I keep on feeling we are doing something wrong by not having a set routine but it siunds more like people do whatever works for them and their baby! The books all seem to recommend a bath/ bed routine but it does seem silly when he sleeps in the living room until we go to bed ...

Do whatever works for you and don't let anyone tell you otherwise!!

My 20wk old has a bath every night but she's on a routine of bath, pyjamas, feed, bed. Works for us but a lot of people don't like that rigid scheduling :)

I bath my 5wk old every night as wanted to start a night routine. Its not always a wash bath if that makes sense sometimes its just warm water and a lay down in it then he has a bottle and is settled for 4-5 hours and knows its night. During the day he doesn't really have long naps and feeds every 2.5 - 3 hours.

Bookwolf32 · 29/09/2013 12:04

We have always bathed every night from about 8 weeks (DD now 10 months), until she was 6 months it was just a quick splash in plain water, just as part of having a routine. We now use gentle baby bubbles every other night as she is all over the floor and also feeds herself, so gets more dirty.
We do find it helps her realise it's bedtime, but it really isn't important until you find your LO is sleeping more at night than day.

Oceansurf · 29/09/2013 12:04

weeblue Same here. We found the strict routine helped us to know it was sleep time for the night (so to speak)

SupermansBigRedPants · 29/09/2013 12:16

Dd2 is 7 weeks and I bathe her in plain water once or twice a week. Ds has excema and dd2 is showing signs of it too so less bathing = less dryed out skin for them.

TheCrumpetQueen · 29/09/2013 14:55

Ds is 9 months and has a bath every evening before bed, really settles him. When he was younger it was every couple of days.
Since weaning, his poos have been so awful and frequent he really does need a bath everyday :)

LouiseD29 · 29/09/2013 19:13

I bathe my 6-week-old about every other day with a bit of baby bath oil in the water to stop her skin drying out. I only tend to use baby wash if she has thrown up on herself! Baths are usually in the mornings at the moment. Was thinking about trying to start some kind of simple routine between 2-3 months, but no rush.

Melonbreath · 29/09/2013 19:15

Bath 11 month old dd every evening before bed. But I only use soapy stuff every few days for washing. Mostly it's part of her wind down routine

omuwalamulungi · 29/09/2013 19:22

Every night, he loves it and seems to know its pyjamas and sleep time after. He's 4 months.

NinaGE · 29/09/2013 20:40

I bath my lo every couple days. I usually do it in the morning but would like to do it in the evening between his 5 and 8 feeds but always fail as there never seems enough time once we've cooked and eaten our dinner. going to really try and do one this week...so we'll see!

Sindarella · 29/09/2013 21:04

I bathe my 15 week old once a week with baby bubbles, an every other night in the kitchen sink Grin

Kerrie34 · 30/09/2013 11:31

I have 9wk old and bathe him Once or twice per week unless he's had a really messy nappy/or been quite sick. Babies have delicate skin & I have found to many baths dry lo skin.x
