Any advice for taking my DD and DS to the dentist?

Ive taken mt DD (now 6) to the dentist a few times now, and she is yet to open her mouth. Tomorrow I have an appointment for her and my DS (3) - It will be his first visit, so could go either way.

Is there any advice anyone can offer me to first of all get them to go without a struggle and secondly any encouragement to get them to open their mouths?

Good old fashioned bribery?

I think the problem might be that you have started too late.

A child is suppose to be going to the dentist every 6 months starting at 12 months old.

I would second bribery.

Mine went from six weeks ( coincided with my appt) and all three are happy to go there. Tell them they have beautiful teeth and your dentist loves beautiful teeth and gives out stickers for the best ones he has seen.

mine both started going from when they first got teeth around 6 months old. Dd was like your dd and took loads of sessions before she would open her mouth. Ds was the opposite and opened his mouth from the start.

tell them to roar like a lion!

Treat it as if you are going to the Post Office or supermarket ie no big deal. If you start saying its not going to hurt the children will pick up on that and wonder why.

There's a peppa pig episode about going to the dentist. Really helped ds. May be too young for your dd though.

And bribery!

Don't assume the worst. We took my DD for the first time at 2.5 and she was happy as larry and she is a nervous sort. Her dad had a checkup at the same time so she chose to watch him first. She did ask if she could sit on his knee during her checkup, which the dentist was happy with.

As soon as we got into the dentist he showed her the sticker she would get afterwards which helped. As did watching a wooly and tig where she goes to the dentist!

There are so.e YouTube videos that show children going to the dentist, you could watch them together beforehand so they know what to expect? I took ds when he'd only just turned 2 and he watched me have my teeth cleaned and checked, then they did him. He sat on my knee on the chair, leaning back in the same position as when I clean his teeth and I held the mirror. I promised him a sticker if he opened his mouth lol!

For so.e, read some.
