7 month old has cold... what do I do?

He is having a lot of difficulty breathing through nose. When he sneezes A LOT of clear snot comes out. He doesn't appear to have a temperature but does seem to be in discomfort (we wondered if he has ear ache or sore throat).

Am I to take him to the doctors or will they just give me calpol?

Is there anything else I should be doing?

He has never been sick before so it's horrible.

If he's uncomfortable sleeping raise the head of his cot.

I have found Olbas for children useful and Snuffle babe.

You can also get a menthol bath bubbles from Cussons which helps my DD.

Lots of steam, stand him next to a hot shower etc.

Encourage him to feed and sleep.

Colds are a good thing! Gets more immunities going!

aw thank you - that is fab. It's a good thing. It's a good thing. Going to repeat that. That is wonderful advice - will send DP down to the Chemist thanks. Poor little lamb.

Don't suppose you know the answer to this one too? He is supposed to start nursery next week - if he has a cold will they take him or will I have to wait till it is gone?

Depends on the nursery OP. Mine is great, they'll take if you're happy to drop unless d&v or temp over 38 which doesn't go down with calpol (which they will give). If you don't send your dc when they have a cold they'll never go! Sorry to tell you OP but the first winter in nursery is bug after bug after bug...

Agree with above. Also sometimes a baby nose aspirator can be useful after saline drops. And calpol if he seems uncomfortable. My general rule is to not go to the gp unless temp that doesn't respond to calpol/brufen or a rash, but I went much more with my pfb Blush!

Hope he's better soon.

My 7MO has a cold at the moment too - a friend has just recommended these - off to track one down tomorrow!

Just warning you, OP, once your DS starts nursery he won't be cold-free until at least July. Prepare for months of green slime hanging out of his nose.
