Does white noise help babies sleep?

My sister is expecting her first baby in a few weeks' time and she has been quizzing me about sleep (or lack of it!). When my son was tiny, in desperation, I left him in his moses basket in the bedroom with the hoover on to get him to sleep (I hope I'm not the only one who has done that!). I've heard that you can or download CDs of white noise nowadays. Has anyone come across them please? :)

If I'm out shopping I always take ds into Hollister just before I take myself for a cuppa in peace.

The lights and loud music always make him shut down and sleep.
