Anyone put dc's onto cows milk before 12 months?

DS will be 12 months in 10 days time. He is almost finished his tub of formula, so nursery have suggested just putting him onto cows milk when it runs out, rather than buy one for the sake of a few days. Anyone else done it a week or so earlier?

I can't imagine ten days would be any problem, am sure they are trying to save you money

Thanks I heart Logically I know it's fine, but I do like to check Grin

Yes ds was just over 11 months when I switched him onto cows milk. He's not a massively tall very healthy 6yr old.

I went back to work about three weeks before DD turned one and she was EBF. The childminder just gave her cow's milk when she was there and she's absolutely fine.

Yup. I did a gradual change over from about 10.5 months since I knew it would be much easier if she was just on cows milk for the start of nursery at 11.5 months. I think once they are eating a good balanced diet, the milk is not so important and it's not like something magical happens at 12 months that makes cow's milk suddenly OK when it wasn't before...

Chubfuddler · 16/09/2013 20:42

Dd never had formula. She only drank breast milk or water until I went back to work when she was 11 months and then I introduced cows milk. She'd been having it on cereal and in cooking since about eight months anyway.

You know ten days is bugger all - your baby could easily have been born ten days earlier or later.

Don't see a problem at all.

Try goats milk if you're worried. It has more 'like for like' qualities of human milk in comparison to cows milk. Google it, facinating reading in my opinion Wink but I'm a bit sad and read up on stuff like this Smile

It will be fine. My ds didn't like formula and I couldn't bf him...so he went on to Cow's milk at 8 months. Not ideal but it was that or nothing...he would not drink formula. He is a very healthy nearly 5 year old. 10 days will not make a difference!

wibblyjelly · 16/09/2013 20:59

Thanks all. Hurrah, no more buying of formula! Grin

We changed to cow's milk at 11.5 mo as we were going on holiday and I didn't want the hassle of making up bottles of formula. All was fine.

StarlightMcKenzie · 16/09/2013 22:08

I ebf until 6 months and then if I missed a feed all my children would have cows milk. Never saw the point of formula for those feeds.

Cows milk just isn't fortified, nor broken down as well into digestible form, but provided the child gets plenty of nutrition from other sources and can process them, all is fine.

wibblyjelly · 16/09/2013 22:11

He eats really well, so not worried on that front.
