Baby sleeping on tummy

Hi there folks, just looking for some of your views on young babies sleeping on tummy. I always lay my baby down on his back for naps and at bedtime. He is now 18 weeks old (4 month+1wk) and I have just woken up to him sleeping on his front so I turned him over however be immediately rolled back onto his tummy, still sound asleep. It's the weekend so cannot discuss with H V until Monday but I'm just a bit freaked out by this. Anyone else's baby sleep on tummy? Just want to add he is strong and has a lot of tummy time during day.

Once they can roll it's fine. As long as you put them down on their backs, you don't have to worry about moving them back onto their backs.

For the first 8 weeks DS slept on us upright! Beyond that we worked it that he would sleep on his tummy with his tummy supported by a cushion. He had reflux and so HATED any time on his back.
We had to make a choice - let him sleep on his tummy or get absolutely no sleep whatsoever.
He's 8.5 months now and can easily roll both ways and now chooses his tummy to sleep on.

He rolled there himself.
He's fine. If you can put him down on his back, brill. if you have a baby Kafri you need to make a decision, but he has made it for you.
In the absence of a method to stop babies moving, he will do what he wants!

I never ever sleep on my back; babies make a choice as soon as they are physically able. If they move to that position themselves they are fine.

Thanks for your answers. I just worry as I have always been told lay baby down on back. I know that Ds can roll onto front but he doesn't often roll back over and read some horrible stories about babies stopping breathing etcHe's my first so just worry (perhaps over worry ha) . X

Same, always place the baby on their back. If they roll over to their side or on belly then they are capable of rolling back. The issue with putting a newborn (not 4 month old) on their front is that they could overheat and cannot cool down. Babies over heating is known to be a cause of cot death. But if they can roll back then don't worry and isn't a risk

You also have to bear in mind that you can't stop them, without watching over them while they sleep.

I put ds on his tummy to sleep from 3 weeks onwards. Just for daytime naps at first when he was in the pram beside me. Then at night from 5 weeks as he clearly was much more comfortable and slept so much better.
I know it's not the recommended approach these days but it really worked for us. Ds is 2 now and rolls around all night in his sleep.
