Can anyone help decipher a baby sign that DS is doing?

Sorry if this is posted in the wrong place.

DS is 16 months and mixes words and signs. I did a baby sign class with him, and I think nursery do baby signing.

He's started tapping his index finger onto his other palm and gets frustrated when I don't understand what he's trying to say.

He also sometimes circles his palm with the index finger of the other hand, I have no idea what this could be either!

Hoping someone might know what these could be.

sideshowbob2 · 29/08/2013 22:14

yes it is toilet

IKnewHouseworkWasDangerous · 29/08/2013 22:15

With the circling could he just really like "walkie round the garden" dd loved it at that age

Beehatch · 29/08/2013 22:16

Tapping the palm does sound like 'more'

ImFineThankYou · 29/08/2013 22:18

We sign daddy as tapping fingers together and toilet is rubbing your shoulder.
Tapping middle of your palm can be mummy, round and round the garden or more.
Dc often signs odd things if trying to sign something and not knowing the sign or confused and frustrated.

Sorry. That's probably no help!

When DS1 did that (nearly 5 years ago now), it meant he wanted to watch 'In the Night Garden'. He also used to stand near the TV and make grunting noises if he wanted Peppa Pig!

PeazlyPops · 29/08/2013 22:39

It's not more, as for that he pats his fist and says more.

It could be daddy, he sometimes does it when I collect him from nursery (usually DH collects) so it could be a sort of "where's daddy?". Although he does say daddy.

I'll try asking him if he means daddy!

In my baby signing book (BSL & Makaton) Daddy is the index and middle finger of one hand tapped onto the index and middle finger of the other hand. Mummy is three fingers tapped twice on the palm of the opposite hand.

Have a look at this video the sign for medicine has a circular motion, it is meant to be the little finger circling in an 'o' shaped hand, but he could be mixing up aspects of different signs.

ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged · 29/08/2013 22:45

In our house the circling palm would mean "I want to watch In The Night Garden" or "I want to go to sleep" (also linked to Night Garden)

PeazlyPops · 29/08/2013 22:52

Ahh yes could also be medicine, he does say medicine though if he wants teething gel (sounds more like medshum!)

It could be night garden, he does watch it sometimes, I'm wondering if he's trying to ask to watch it or wants one of his night garden teddies.

Thanks for the ideas, I'll try and narrow down what he wants! It's so frustrating for him.

Baby signing is meant to eliminate frustration isn't it?Grin

valiumredhead · 29/08/2013 22:57

Reduce not eliminate

TwoStepsBeyond · 29/08/2013 23:13

Rubbing one finger onto the palm was my kids' sign for medicine.
