Questions about swaddling

So my 7 week old DS won't sleep for any length of time unless he's on me or swaddled tightly. Once he's fought an arm out, we know we're on borrowed time until he wakes up again.

So I'm wondering,

  • how long did you swaddle your babies?
  • how did you know it was time to stop?
  • did your LO sleep in a sleeping bag/with blankets easily enough when you stoppes or was some coaxing involved?

We swaddled until 10 weeks when dd decided she like sleeping with her arms splayed out. We knew it was time to stop as she fought her swaddle as i put her down to get her arms out.
My mate swaddled until almost 5 months, all babies are different.
She slept in her sleeping bag really easily. I did use blankets but she just wiggled out of those and cried when she got cold.
It was so cold in our house to begin with I put her in a sleeping bag and swaddled with a sheet over the top so really I just took off the swaddling and put a top on over the sleeping bag

Have you tried a swaddle pod that may buy you a few more weeks!

He fights when we wrap him up but settles really quickly and sleeps much better as he doesn't then startle himself! I just wondered if there was something we should look out for perhaps. .

Do you have miracle blankets. They are amazing.
Both my daughters were swaddled for months.
They just loved it.
We stopped when they had learned to self settle, and sleep for extended periods of time. It just felt the right time?!
They went straight to sleeping bags with no issues.
The oldest continues to be an excellent sleeper at 3 and her sister (8months) is doing well also.
I am a massive fan of swaddling.

What are you swaddling with? We used the SwaddleMe, which I think is the same as the miracle blanket, which you can get in various sizes. We swaddled until nearly 6 months, and started testing the waters at naptimes first. I think we did one arm out on its own for a few days and then just braved it. I swear by them too, I will buy everyone I know having their first baby a swaddle wrap on the off-chance it is useful!

We moved straight to sleeping bags and she didn't notice at all, not once she had grown out of the startle reflex.

When do they grow out of startling themselves? We're just using blankets since he's grown out of the grobag swaddles we had and wasn't sure whether to pay out for new ones!

Can take between 3-6 months so you've got a while to go yet!

Ok, off to Amazon I go!

I'd get new ones - have a look on eBay perhaps, see if there are any? I agree it can take months for them to grow out of swaddling, though there's no reason not to try him in blankets and see if he is ready now.
