Help - Dd (11m) suddenly getting up at 5am!

My DC3 is my absolute angel baby. He's great. Sunny tempered, great eater, good sleeper. This has been very novel for me!!

But around 8 weeks ago he started waking looking for a bottle between 5 and 6 and would then go back over to sleep happily til around 7/730. We tried upping food near bedtime, making sure he always had his bedtime bottle and putting his music on via the monitor which sometimes just settled him without the bottle. But it seemed to continue so we were just riding with a little bit since he's so good.

BUT (sobs) he has now decided 5am is his new getting up time, he is bouncing round the place, chatting and jumping up, no chance that he goes back over. We've tried ignoring the protesting for a while but it just gets louder and then dds get wakened which is disastrous for their form later in the day.

Anyone any suggestions - DH and I are alternating early starts at the mo but it's breaking us!!

Hello Maggietess - did it work?

RiceorChips · 15/08/2013 18:06

Watching this thread with interest as my 11 month old DS also wakes at 5am everyday!!

Im not sure if he is ready to start the day then as at the moment I bring him into our bed, he has a little feed off me then usually goes back to sleep for an hour or so.

I know Im probably not helping myself by feeding him / letting him sleep a bit longer with us but Im certainly not ready to start the day at 5am so it's the easiest thing!

He has always been a bit of a rubbish sleeper though and compared to what it used to be like (waking every 2 hours) I can just about cope with this!

And for the record, he has 2 x 30 mins naps a day usually around 11am & 4pm.

wholeshebang I'd been reluctant to post back and jinx myself too early... But.... It does seems to be working!

A bit of a mixture of earlier to bed (630) and tough love the first two mornings.

First morning he woke at 5, we gave bottle and put him back down. He complained (not distressed just a bit cross on and off between playing) for about 40 mins then fell asleep til 7. Same thing second day but slept then til 750.

This morning he woke at 6, got bottle and went back til 715 so all much of an improvement.

Daytime naps have stayed roughly the same (just without the first catch up nap). I know I've probably got cocky now thinking it's working and tomorrow when dh is working he'll be screaming at 430 but fingers crossed so far so good!

riceorchips I'm with you on the bottle/feeding at 5am.i know technically it would uld be better jot to have it but it's a huge step up from being up at 5am. I'm hoping it will disappear over time like it did with my older two.

I had the same problem. Someone told me that if I got up at flourish and went in to turn baby over to bring her out of deep sleep into rem sleep (but not wake her) this would reset her sleep cycle and she would sleep for longer. It worked! You have to do it for a few days but then baby gets used to it. She went from 5 am to getting up at half 6. Good luck!

I think we may be establishing a new pattern. Today's bottle was 620 and he went back over til 700. This is more like it. Seems crazy but I think the answer was going to bed half an hour earlier at 630....

Glad you've had some luck with it. Odd how these babies work isn't it? lol

mumofboyo · 17/08/2013 12:13

Early signs are good, glad you seem to have found a solution (hoping I've not jinxed you...). Early mornings really are crap, aren't they?

Maggietess · 17/08/2013 20:41

kafri I know, they are all some little mysteries!

mumofboyo I still have all fingers and toes crossed. There's nothing I hate more in the world than early mornings! He was rubbing his eyes at 625 this eve and went down beautifully at 630 again so I think he's adjusted to the new timetable (I hope!!).

Now if only we could tackle DD2"s amazing monster stupendous temper tantrums so easily.... We'd have it all cracked then!! Wink Grin

less sleep usually works, how many naps is he having/.my ds is the same age and started waking up 6 ish sometimes earlier so i dropped the 9.30-10 nap he was having and now he just has the 2 hour one at 12.30 after his lunch.he wakes between 7 and 8 now.

sharond101 · 20/08/2013 22:18

not always ringaringarosy. The opposite was the case for us as ess sleep meant our DS was overtired so woke more through night and up earlier and at 11mo I'd guess the OP's LO still needs their 2 naps.
