My 3 week old is breast fed. Usually wakes up every 2 hours for a feed. Today its been around every 3 hours and she is currently still asleep and its been just over 4 hours since she last fed. Just tried to wake her up to offer a feed but she was not interested and had just gone back to sleep. I know i probably sound mental but is this normal? I read so much info saying that babies MUST feed at least every 4 hrs and if they dont then wake them up then i read if they need it they will wake up for it. Im just so easily worried

Has she had one breast or both in the last feed? Is she still sleeping?

antimatter · 04/08/2013 00:44

How are her nappies? Is she weeing as usual?

starsandstripes72 · 04/08/2013 01:48

She has just woke with a little coaxing and is currently feeding. Her nappy was dry when i just went to change her. I know every baby is different in how long they leave between feeds but it was so unlike her. Both breasts were offered at her last feed and il do the same now.

As long as you have wet/dirty nappies then it's okay. At 3 weeks my DD would sleep for 3-4 hours at night, on occasion 5 (which had me very scared!). Was your baby a healthy birth weight? If she was on the larger side and has been gaining weight then you are probably okay. But keep an eye on those nappies. Hope everything's ok.

Lagoonablue · 04/08/2013 08:01

Am sure she is fine. Enjoy the rest!

MyDS used to go ages between feeds sometimes. I rarely left it longer than 4 hours to wake him though.

wellieboots · 04/08/2013 08:05

Normal as long as she has a minimum of 6-8 feeds across 24 hours and plenty of wet and dirty nappies. Just feed on demand, and if she demands less at night enjoy some sleep! I woke DD to feed a minimum of 3 hourly during the day, but I never woke her at night to feed. I just fed whenever she woke.

Potteresque97 · 04/08/2013 08:06

Dd would sleep up to 5 hours after midnight and why you'll probably find if you don't wake her is at the next feed she's pretty hungry. If she slept a long stretch and then wasn't hungry, then I might be concerned but as the other people said, if she's doing nappies (hv can advise how many wets in 24 hrs) then don't sweat.

Dackyduddles · 04/08/2013 08:08

Could indicate start of a growth spurt. She might sleep a bit then feed like she's not been fed for a month. As others say so long as nappies remain usual you're ok. But phone midwife if very worried.

redwellybluewelly · 04/08/2013 08:12

Growth spurt IMHO

Also. My DD2 is a sleepy baby, we barely saw her eyes until she was four weeks old. Now at eight weeks old she sleeps 9-6 quite often! However my midwife told me that although newborns need feeding every three hours minimum one stretch of five hours in every twenty four won't hurt them and sleep is very important for growing.

Rooners · 04/08/2013 08:23

I was amazed to get a 6 hour stretch around this point I think - but it didn't concern me because I was asleep!

It never happened again though Grin I don't think it's wrong, just a bit random. Obviously if she went on sleeping for another few hours or so, in the day, or was unwakeuppable, you know, or hot or poorly then I'd start to worry but 4 hours is great.

Some babies sleep for longer. Some never sleep at all yes ds I am looking at you

mrsmartin1984 · 04/08/2013 18:57

I nearly had a heart attack when my DD slept for 4hours. Not panic. As long as you are feeding on demand and have lots of wet nappies it's all ok. The first few weeks are so stressful

Nexus6 · 04/08/2013 21:22

I've got a 3 week ( nearly 4) old and she was sleeping on four/3 hour blocks last night, full of tears today though! I think what the others were saying about growth spurts is right. I've noticed dd has a feeding frenzy for a day and then she'll have a mega sleep.

debbie1412 · 04/08/2013 21:26

Probably the start of a growth spurt. Mine slept heavy the onset then fed alot the nxt day !

bluestar2 · 04/08/2013 21:29

My money is on growth spurt. Sleep is important and aslong as nappies are wet I wouldn't worry. I would count the feeds she has a day though and aim for 8 just to make sure your supply doesn't dwindle.
