Hi I'm overwhelmed with anxiety about this (also have pnd) my ds doesn't seem to sleep in the day, somedays he is awake all day.he seems to be quite content being awake and might just drift in and out of sleep.ive tried taking him to the cot etc but it makes no difference.he sleeps fine at night,we put him in his cot at 8 after his last feed and he sleeps anywhere between 1-3am then feeds then sleeps until 6/7am.ive become almost obsessed with this sleeping thing, its making me very upset because I am convinced he should be sleeping more.any advice would be much appreciated.am I being too concerned?

If he is contented during the day then I'm sure he is fine. I got very concerned about how many naps my newborn was having and how long she napped for and then compared it to the other new mums/babies I knew. After a few months I realised that babies are all different and let my one do what she wanted/needed and at that point she was a lot easier to manage and she got into a better routine.

Hi, I really wouldn't worry! Newborns are just like people of any other age - some need a lot more sleep than others! My first was the same - she used to take, at the very most, three short naps of 15-20 mins during the day - but often less. She also slept well at night. After six months, she started taking just one longer nap in the day, but it was rarely more than 1.5 hours, often just an hour. She dropped naps completely before 18 months. But she was absolutely fine, she's always been healthy and very forward in her development. I'm convinced it was because she had more time awake to learn new things!

Now she's nine and she still needs less sleep than her peers, but she's doing very well at school. So don't worry!!

Someone on here linked this website for me when I was having similar issues: www.troublesometots.com/are-you-keeping-baby-awake-too-long/

I found it really helpful and my little one does sleep in the day now, providing I keep him awake and entertained for a while after being fed.

Mine didn't sleep during the day much as a newborn, I think her record was 13 hours without a proper nap, I think she did 5 mins but that was it. She is now 15 Weeks and sleeps better. She will have a minimum of 3 half hour naps, but sometimes the naps can be over an hour long. She gradually started getting better after 6 Weeks.

DD isn't much of a day sleeper either but sleeps well at night. She'd have a few cat naps during the day e.g. 10 mins to maybe an hour but by 6 weeks was sleeping from 10pm to 7am so couldn't complain too much. She's now 7 months and has a 30 min nap in the morning, a 2 hour nap around 2pm, goes to bed around 7.30 and sleeps til about 6.30am. She has a feed then and goes back to sleep until about 9 am.
