Newborn...swimming?

My baby is 2 weeks old and i was wondering when is it possible to take her swimming to the public pool. Didnt know if there was a general rule. And how long would you stay in a swimming pool with your little one?

I think you have to wait until after the first jabs.

I took dd at seven weeks, but you can go this early. I'd recommend a baby wrap to keep them warm and help you grip. No more than twenty mins for the first few weeks, building up to thirty mins. :)

I did think it was perhaps after her jabs...but thought i may be getting confused with taking puppies for a walk after their jabs ;)

Baby can go as early as you like. Took me a lot longer than 2 weeks to be able to take mine, as I was still bleeding lots!

I took ds at six weeks, waited until after the 6week check up. Agree with the baby wrap - keeps them nice and warm. go for 15/20 mins and stay longer each week Smile

No need to wait for jabs. I would only stay in for 20 mins as long as the baby is happy.

You'll need a disposable nappy and a neoprene nappy or similar on top.

And I third the baby wrap, public swimming pools can be cold.

Sorry when I said disposable nappy I meant a disposable swim nappy, not a normal disposable nappy.

Im probably going to leave it another week or 2. But thank you for your advice...already ordered a baby wrap!

If you have family changing take dad too, juggling a baby and getting yourself dry takes a bit of practice.

Also if your lucky enough to have a choice of pools, some are distantly warmer than others.

Actually I would recommend one of these baby wetsuits! They are fab and a lot more warm & comfortable than the wraps (used a wrap with my first child the found these). Basically there is no right amount of time to stay in...be led by your baby and keep an eye on his/her colour (blue lips are badWink).

We started Little Dippers at 6 weeks, but that was in a warm hydrotherapy pool.

DS loved it, and still adores being in the water 11 years later!
