Teething hell !!

Hi all,

9 mo DS is teething ... and it's worse than anything I ever expected !! He had high fever over the weekend... which has thankfully gone now. But his gums are swollen and he just wants to be carried around and will cry when put down :( He hasn't slept properly for at all since the weekend...
We are giving him Calpol, but I'm also a bit worried about giving him too much...

Also, he hasn't had any proper solids since Friday night !! So that's almost a week.... I am worried he isn't getting enough nutrients. He only wants to eat cold yogurt... which I believe soothes his gums. He has gone back to breastfeeding full time....
Should I be worried that he isn't taking any other solids ??

Thanks in advance for all your help :)

I have one thing to say to you...

ANEBESOL LIQUID!

It provides immediate numbness to the area - I use it for mouth ulcers as well as teething babies - giving the Calpol time to work.

Do not buy the gel - DS will lick it off.

Don't worry about the eating, yoghurt and plenty of breastfeeds will do just fine for now. Lots of ice-lollies too.

Sorry, no real experience as my DS isn't really teething yet. A friend if mines DS also didn't eat much for a few days when he was cutting teeth, which is understandable really.

What about offering him slices of cold melon, that might sooth his gums and its food too?

Sympathies. Teething isn't fun for anyone. I find that baby ibuprofen works better than Calpol. And sticks of cucumber always help my DS. He currently has his first molars coming through. Ouch!

Hi..be prepared for spontaneous and sore looking nappy rash and squirty tummy too..personally I recommend Metanium as the nappy rash cream of champions (known as maintain-yer-bum in our house).

Have you tried chilling fruit for him to eat? Also, try and get feeding time with not too hot or crunchy stuff to coincide with half an hour or so after calpol so he's at maximum pain relief.

The teething rings that you pop in the freezer were a godsend with ours too.

Mine's 8 months, we're surviving on calpol, an amber necklace and a lot of sling wearing so far...

Hi all,

Thanks for the responses and the tips :)
Sorry it took me so long to get back as we were moving house !! (I am currently surrounded by boxes... Must log off MN and unpack ;) )

DS very typically got better the moment I posted this on MN... Which is becoming a trend with him. The moment I decide that I cannot handle the current crisis and turn to MN, DS decides yo get better :)
Have noted down all your suggestions for the next time as there's still no sign of a tooth...
