When they are climbing out of the cot with the possibility of hurting themselves.
For us it was about 2.3.
Made a huge fuss about the big boy bed, let him set it up with dad, new bedding...very important, and make it a fun fun thing with LOTS of thier input and involvement.
Worked well for us. Smile

I left it too long with ds1, because I was insanely overprotective, and the first time he climbed out (he was about 3.2, it was a very high-sided cot) he cut his head open and now has a little scar Sad

ds2 is now 20mo, is a real climber and very adventurous, so I am agonising over when to move him to a junior bed. My friend's ds is a few weeks younger than him and is already in a bed. I'll be watching this thread with interest.

Between 2 and 3 years, I think. Toddler beds are low to the ground so they can't hurt themselves if they fall out, or if you're going straight to a proper bed then you'll need a bed rail. They do need to be able to get in and out of the bed by themselves though.

we did it last week, days after dd was 3. she has never tried to climb out though, and loved her cot. still loves it as a bed but has fallen out a handful of times (not woken though.... v amusing to hear thud, go up (or sometimes not hear thud) and find her fast asleep on duvet (protection) on floor.)

We are getting ds a bed for his second birthday, he sleeps in a low bed or on a mattress on the floor at grandparents and when on holiday so think he will be fine.

mistressmiggins · 31/05/2006 06:05

I have put both mine in a bed from about 18 months and they've been fine.
I tuck them in with a sheet & duvet on top

only problem is DD (nrly 2) can get out of bed and sometimes wanders in at 5am !!!

Our circumstances with ds2 were exactly the same as Donbeans, age, big boy bed etc

We have also put a stairgate on his bedroom door though. He ususally plays in his room for about 15-30 minutes after bedtime, then gets back in all on his own and goes to sleep

2.4 she was starting to climb...got big girl bed, kept cot in her room for a few days and she loved it. No problems at all for a week (had thought it would be a nightmare for some reason) then she had a huge grief-y meltdown missing her cot, missing being a baby, wanting cuddles galore. Which obviously she got. Then another easy week, then a repeat meltdown - and now she's fine!

Elibean · 31/05/2006 08:21

ps we got a bed guard, which works well - dd says it reminds her of holidays (travel cot, because it has mesh side) and she's not fallen out once.

....3 years...late, I know!! this was our way to deal with it: our daughter helped my husband dismantle the cot and they said goodbye to it...told her it was going to a little baby as she was now a 'girl'..and she was fine after that !!!!

good luck!!
