How much do you get down and play with your 10 month old?

Ds is on the cusp of 10 months - sitting, not quite crawling but moving about quite a bit. Suddenly occurred to me today I hardly play with him at all. He sits at my feet and we "chat" and interact but I hardly get down on the floor and "play" with him. He is such a happy, relaxed little fellow and he plays quite happily by himself, but I'm wondering if perhaps I should try and interact with him a bit more.

What do you do (or did you do at this stage if you are past it)

My DD is 10 months old. I hold her high and whoosh her quickly down to the floor - makes her laugh her head off.

I hold her under her arms, facing outwards, and spin her around.

If we're facing each other, she likes to move her forehead towards mine until our noses are touching.

She crawls over my legs. Boings on her knees and laughs like a lunatic.

To put it in context, our house is a building site so now she is crawling, she doesn't get much chance to play by herself as there is rubble/builders' dust everywhere.

If what you are doing is good for you then carry on!

My DS used to just play around my feet and show me things and we'd chat about them... I can honestly say I very, very rarely get down on the floor and play with him. He is happy being incontrol of the play in this way.

We have always done this, he is now 17months and has lots of words and interacts wonderfully with other kids and adults alike. So long as your Ds is getting all the info he needs and attention from you when asking for it, then IMO there is no need to change your mode of interaction.

yup, I think that's what prompted me to ask really - ie if he has delayed language development further down the line, will I be beating myself up over it for not doing more with him? God I sound like a complete loon worrying over it now don't I ?

My instinct is to think that although I could do more, I'm doing enough. Thanks for your replies, I'll stop worrying about not being supermum

i get down and interact with ds for about half an hour a day......anymore and he gets bored with me!! i do talk and sing to him almost non stop during the day....but he spends most of his time chasing the cat around.

he 'helps' me with the household chores....he particularly likes the laundry.(smile) he's crawling properly and just started pulling himself up on the furniture so i do seem to spend more hands on time with him that way, because his balance is still very bad!

i know exactly what you mean though Miaou....i feel i should play more with ds but he's just not that interesting in 'playing' as such.

don't interfere with a child who is playing happily by himself .. he is developing hand-eye co-ordination, imaginative skills, communicative skills and an ability to entertain himself

unless of course you fancy a smooch in which case sit on the floor with him

Depends on the child. Dd had to have me right there with her, never played by herself - still does not at 2.8, now orders me to sit next to her on the floor lol. If your ds is happy as he is, you are doing lots already ... and thank your lucky stars!

I feel the same about dd who is just 9 months and doing same as your ds. Mind you, I'm not doing anything different with her than I did with ds and he seems ok. I'm not that great at playing on the floor generally, I prefer to be out and about with them or at a music group or something. Dd seems happy enough, tbh she's happiest when her brother plays with her rather than one of us....
