anyone got any tips? we're obviously not forcing her, but really want her out of bottom bunk so can get 3 year old out of cot.... she is scared she will fall out. wondering about getting additional bed guard to help her feel more secure.

How about one of those tents you can click over a bunk bed which will make her feel like she is sleeping in a den

I didn't realise top bunks were recommended for children that age. It's quite a long way to fall. Could you get one of the beds that pull out from the main bed?

Just put the mattress on the floor for now.

Think advice is age six for top bunk, but sure many have done earlier.

I would buy a tent clip on and make it a fun den for now, somewhere to play so she can get used to the height and get a trundle bed. Once she gets used to it you can move her up and the trundle bed can be used for sleep overs.

have both of them sleep on the bottom bunk?

3littlefrogs · 29/05/2013 22:55

I agree with discodonkey. Put the mattress on the floor. I wouldn't put a five year old in a top bunk anyway, even if she wasn't scared.

Can you put the mattress on the floor at right angles to the bottom bunk (making an L shape)? She won't be tall enough to need the whole length of it, so the "foot" end could go under the bed IYSWIM.

I've got to be honest, I'd still be scared of sleeping on a top bunk now Blush

AnyFucker · 29/05/2013 22:58

She is too young for the top bunk, that is why she is scared

lougle · 29/05/2013 23:00

She should be 6 for the top bunk, so she's helping you to be sensible Smile

Do they share a room at the moment?

DS2 was in a tiny bedroom. When he was 2 I moved all the furniture out, put a mattress on the floor and a stairgate across the (open) door.

He slept quite happily like that until he was old enough to go into a proper bed.

He and his brother went into bunk beds at 4 and 7.

My 3 yr old sleeps in a top bunk!!!

It has v high sides and there is no way he could fall out!

He takes it in turns with his 4 yr old brother Smile.

Interesting.. I have the same problem at the moment and just thought DS would get there eventually .. I knowlots of 5yo's who sleep in the top bunk or a high sleeper ..

Good to know though. I won't push it :)

thanks for replies. yes she's young for it, but tiny house issues... anyway good to hear feedback, I will think through alternatives and I won't push it. no way she will get mattress on floor, its a box room...
