Dd1 (2.4) has decided there are now mosters everywhere and had got particularly upset at bedtime tonight. She also woke in the night upset a few times recently which I think is linked. What do you say to reassure them? I said 'it's okay I'm here and theres no monsters' or similar. Anyone have any tips for what else I can do?

We had the same problem. A night light has really helped. Sometimes he sleeps with the main light on as well though and I wait until he is asleep and switch it off.

I used to reassure DD there were no monsters but just in case I'd make sure she had her pig / frog / robot because everyone knows monsters are scared of them Grin. It sounds counter-intuitive to buy into the fantasy but it really worked for us.

I have 5 dcs and found the best way to deal with it was to brandish a broom handle under the bed bellowing, 'Any monsters in here had better look out! I am the meanest Mummy in the whole world and I am not to be messed with! So if there are any monsters in here you had better run away now or I will beat you to death with my broom!'

(I am a scary sort of woman though Grin).

I've put monsters out into the garden for the night before. It seemed to help more than trying to persuade a toddler that they didn't exist.

My 4yr old has recently become panicked over monsters, despite me reassuring her they arent real. So i said " i was given some mummy monster drops at the hospital when you were born, i could make some monster spray?"

She was yelling yes yes! Make a spray. So i used lavender oil in water and i spray her room all over. I tell her monsters arent real but it'll stop them coming into her dreams. Because its lavender it aids restful sleep anyway. No more monsters in this house. And her room smells nice!
