Suddenly very competitive

DS1 has just turned 5 and suddenly everything is a competition. After swimming all he wants to know is whether he was the best in the class. The same with everything he does, cycling, writing, reading etc. He's also very competitive with his brother, always putting him down and saying he's better than he is at everything. He is of course, since his brother's 2!

How do I address this? It's not an attitude we foster at home and it worries me a bit that he's so obsessed with being the best at everything rather than just enjoying what he's doing. I noticed a lot of competitive 'talk' from children at a party recently (mostly from the girls) and was wondering if this is a normal thing for pre-schoolers.
