Not rolling yet

DS has just turned six months - he can sit unaided, has teeth, we've started weaning and is otherwise a happy and alert little thing. Except he won't roll. He can - he's done random single rolls here and there. He just won't. Is this ok?

DD 7mths doesn't either but has been sitting for 2 mths. I think she likes to take things in rather than squirm. She doesn't have teeth either!

Try not to worry - soon enough he'll be well on the move and you'll be yearning for these days... Grin

My twins are almost 9m (5 weeks prem though). One had been doing it occasionally for a couple of weeks, other still not bothering. Don't worry, it'll come. And then life gets significantly more difficult. Then they crawl.

Mabelface · 02/05/2013 17:59

My eldest didn't bother until he was 9 months old, at the same time as crawling and sitting up. He wasn't very fussed about doing it. My younger three rolled now and again, but again, weren't fussed. They're all where they should be developmentally. :) Sooo, the answer is, yes, it's fine.

Normal, don't worry.

Orenishii · 02/05/2013 19:57

Thanks everyone :)

The HV said I should take him to be assessed if he wasn't rolling by 7 months - I thought this to be a little excessive!

Massively excessive!!!!

Brownowlahi · 02/05/2013 20:46

Try and stop worrying about this. Babies develop at completely different rates and maybe your baby just isn't bothered about rolling over at the moment. My dc1 could sit up aT 6 months but didn't roll until 10 months. She walked 2 weeks later. :)

DD didn't roll til she was about 18mo. She could crawl, walk, climb stairs etc all way before she rolled. Some kids just can't be arsed, I reckon.

Cloverer · 02/05/2013 23:18

DS was rolling at 6 months but nowhere near sitting!

Nicknamefail · 03/05/2013 10:05

My 7mo rolls for Britain, for is a long way off sitting. I think they expend lots of brain and physical energy learning one skill and then take a break before developing the next skill. Doing either first is normal. Some will do both earlier, and some will do both later. Each baby is different.

Nicknamefail · 03/05/2013 10:07

Sorry op, just retread and realised your dc can but doesn't roll. Actually the same with dd, she started to roll at 3mo and then did it one a month until 5mo, then suddenly started doing it lots. Your dc obviously just doesn't want to roll!! Nice that they can though.

ChazDingle · 03/05/2013 15:37

My DS (3 years this month) never really rolled except a couple of times by accident. I was worried about it like you are and my HV told me that some babies never roll and its not considered a milestone, like sitting, pulling up to standing etc would be, so they don't have to look out for this or worry if babies don't roll.

Obviously DS can roll now but i think it was much later on when he was crawling, maybe even walking before he bothered.

lola88 · 03/05/2013 19:50

DS started to roll and when he started crawling at 8mo before that he couldn't get over at all he walked at 11mo so he's not delayed

Gooseysgirl · 04/05/2013 22:12

DD did it about 3/4 times at 5 months and never bothered again, it was almost like she did it to prove she could and then couldn't be arsed afterwards!! She sat unaided by 7 months.

Pinebarrens · 04/05/2013 22:17

My DD rolled once. She was furniture cruising at 7.5 months and walked at 11months. She was sitting unaided at 6 months, crawled the same day as she walked. She's now a smart bright energetic 4 year old who can swim, run jump hop skip etc

DS is 7 months and rolls all over the place he was a little later in sitting 6.5 months

I think your HV is over reacting. Massively.
