Strange noises on the baby monitor?!

Has anyone else experienced odd noises over the baby monitor? I have been getting increasingly freaked out this evening! I have been to check on DS a few times and he has been fast asleep...but on the baby monitor I swear i've been hearing humming, clicking, scratching....weird noises that I am fairly certain my 13 week old baby is not capable of! I'd say that it could be interference from next door...but the house next door is empty, as is the one next to that, both have been for a while, and we don't have anyone the other side. It's beginning to worry me a bit!

Anyone else had this?!

Are they digital ones? If not they csn pick up lots of noises. Sil's used to pick up the monitors noises from across the road.

Ooh it's maybe like the bit in the film 'Signs' where they hear the aliens communicating over the baby monitor. Grin

Ours used to do that, sometimes we could even here it picking up someone else's monitor. Rather freaky, none the less.

They pick up all sorts of interference, we heard other parents and babies, the local taxi firm, the police and paramedics! Switched ours off in the end!

It's a digital tommee tipee (sp?!) one.

Eeeeek, hope it's not aliens!

I'm glad this has happened to other people and not just me! It's so creepy though!

Yes you can get interference from anything electronic. I stopped using our video monitor as it would freak me out - freezing on a frame, switching the image to a mirror image etc. Would work ok after turning it off and on again, but I just didn't like it! It was worse with clicks/interference the closer it was to computer or wireless type stuff.

Cosmo89 · 08/04/2013 16:07

Only a suggestion.... Mice?

Doodledumdums · 08/04/2013 20:58

Eeeek, Mike that would freak me out!

No pretty sure it's not mice as the noise doesn't happen when I am in the room.

It's probably just interference from somewhere I guess.

Probably just interference.

When my daughter was young, we had the angelcare one and we used to have someone reading their daughter their bedtime story on theirs and all sorts of odd conversations.

Although oddly, we were the only couple with young children in our street (about 15 houses). There were no children in the next road across either so we had no idea where it came from!

Doodledumdums · 08/04/2013 22:41

Oh god that sounds really creepy! But then I am easily spooked!

We were woken once by the local taxi firm confirming a pick up.
That was a mind bender half asleep!
But my favorite one was loud & rushed '4, 2 (or similar) 4, 2, control, confirm large dog loose on XTown high street, attempting to make safe he's off that way Dave, quick' no idea if animal rescue, police or who but very funny at the time.
Don't be creeped out you might get some gems.

Doodledumdums · 08/04/2013 23:43

Haha, those sound hilarious!

Who needs a TV or a radio when you've got a baby monitor?!

I had a barking dog over mine. That was OK, but then one night I awoke to the sound of dd's mobile over the monitor...except dd's mobile wasn't on...dun-dun-DUN! Interference, but it freaked me out, so that was the last time the monitor got used.

mrsmarzipan · 09/04/2013 14:04

When our dd was small I would often wake up hearing French style music and people talking in French, dh thought I was mad and being totally sleep deprived I started to wonder too until the night it woke him up!!! We live in Scotland so no idea where it was picking it up from! (It was a cheap tommee tippee one and haven't heard it again since upgrading!)Grin

CoffeeShoppe · 09/04/2013 14:11

We had the neighbours coming through on ours as they were putting their baby to bed and singing to him.. It was awful, we cringed at the thought that they too could have heard us in our house. Threw them away in the end.

ThePippy · 09/04/2013 14:29

Mobile phones next to a monitor are a very common cause of these noises as often background updates are sent to phones by the network operators and these digital signals are picked up by the monitor.

rrreow · 09/04/2013 15:08

If it transmits wirelessly (which all baby monitors do I guess.. who'd want a wired monitor..) then I'm guessing it will use a certain channel/frequency, so could potentially pick up other noises being transmitted over the same channel/frequency. As their range is pretty small it shouldn't happen often but maybe if you happen to have a neighbour who uses the same make that could happen?

PogoBob · 09/04/2013 15:21

This is the exact reason I don't have a monitor for either of the DC!!

Thankfully I have good hearing so have never had trouble hearing them.

MrsHoarder · 09/04/2013 15:33

PogoBob its not just hearing: I don't take the monitor to my parents' house and can hear DS fine from anywhere in the house. But at home we have solid internal walls and its much harder to hear him if I'm not in the next room.

Sizzlesthedog · 10/04/2013 21:10

We had this, freaked me out. We heard a man talking, I ran upstairs. DC sleeping, all fine. DH said it's only interference, voice came over the monitor "that's not true ", I was so freaked.

Changing channels on the monitor sorted it out, it's very common apparently.

whatsoever · 10/04/2013 21:17

We've had weird clicking on ours, I kept running up to check but DS was fast asleep & still. Interference sounds the most likely.

Orenishii · 12/04/2013 14:47

Sizzlesthedog - WTF could he hear you?? I thought they weren't two way?
