my 2 year old grandson is with me for the weekend, he isnt very well, he is very hot, chesty cough and snotty, he has 2 very red cheeks and has spent most of the day cuddled up on the couch, he is leaning on me now,and the heat off him,is like a hot water bottle. I have just given him some calpol, do you think it would be ok to give him some cough medicine aswell.

Iam going to sponge him down and put clean pjs on him,my youngest is 14, so been a while since i had a sick toddler.

I'd check his temperature 20 mins after the calpol. If its still high then you may need to think about getting some medical help, a&e or nhs direct. I wouldn't give him cough medicine. If I was his mum I would definitely want to know.

Hope he's better soon.

If his cough is chesty and keeps him awake try sitting in a steamy bathroom with him for twenty mins. The steam will loosen the phlegm and will settle his cough.

Yes, the steam or a bath is a good idea - you can't get 'chesty' cough medicine for children anyway, only 'dry' cough medicine (they can't have decongestants) but you could try some Olbas Oil in the steam. You can put Vicks on his chest as well.

Thanks ZuleikaD
