Which films are suitable for a 5 yr old ?

Have let my 5 yr old son watch TITANIC and as the older teenagers have Stars Wars and Lord of the Rings he has seen those too. Know he is a bit young for the latter..what do you think..

I personally wouldn't let mine (5 in August) watch any of those

They will be sticking to Nemo, Chitty Chitty bang bang, Mary Poppins etc etc for a long time yet!!!!!

I think it depends on the child. DD1 (aged 5) 'catches' the news sometimes when we have it on and asks questions. I figure she needs explanations over most things though of course some crimes (sexual offences, etc)I gloss over. She loves the Lion King, Annie, and the usual Disney stuff. Other kids her age are frightened of the Lion King - so it depends on their personality.

Agree it depends on the child. Had reservations about dd (4) watching Narnia but she loved it. ds (8) is much more cautious and easily spooked. Both watched Dr Who the other night - dd was rivetted , ds hiding frm the monsters and wantignt he light on at night. Or perhaps it is something to do with how they interpret what they see at different ages , The Child of Our Time series looked at this once.

I find that my 5yo & 3yo enjoy the older 'classics' more than the modern films. I think the older ones often have simpler plotlines. Mary Poppins is a favourite, as is Pinocchio. The older one got very distressed watching a Winnie the Pooh spin-off, where some of the animals fell into a deep dark cave. The adventure was definitely not to his taste. One or two scenes in Thomas (another favourite) frighten him too. So we're definitely sticking with the tame stuff for now!

I think that a lot goes over their heads. But I wouldn't let such a young child watch anything 'older', as it is difficult to know how they interpret things, and what will upset them. Particularly violence. Things that we don't consider violent can seem incredibly aggressive to a young child.

My DS is 4.5 and he watches Star Wars, Thunderbirds movie, Dr Who etc. He watches CBBC now as he thinks CBeebies is boring. Avctually my DS is quite "young" for his age but he is not interested in pre-school programmes.

Thanks for your own opinions. I know he does watch inappropriate stuff sometimes but it is hard with teenagers. When they babysit (15 and 18yrs) they put star wars on for him for peace more than anything and he adores it. But if i had my way all the time it would be Tweenies and cbb's all the time, its so nice and innocent .
The latest is Mrs Doubtfire which is ok i think and Hook.
