My baby rarely burps but he farts - is this 'getting his wind up'?

He farts like a trooper but for the life of me I can't get him to burp.

His grannies can; they are obsessed with burping him and will sit for ages and eventually he will burp. I don't have this knack, nor do I have the strength in my neck or back to spend an hour winding.

Sometimes my dh and I wonder if the grannies are rubbing his back etc so much that's they create wind and that is why he burps?

Is the fact that he farts ok?

Dm and mil are stressing me out about this.

farting will clear him of wind, shouldn't be a problem

farting is fine. as long as it comes out, it doesn't matter which end

DD was a farter, DS is a burper all babies are just different.

His grannies aren't getting his wind up, they're just carrying on until he gets it up - nothing you do (other than helping them sit upright so it comes up a bit easier) actually brings wind up. It comes up when it's coming (or goes down in your DS's case). Farting is fine. If he's bfed then you don't need to do it at all. It's all old wives tales.

Me too. She's 6 w/o and I've given up as it she doesn't seem to care whether I burp her and most of the time I can't get a burp up. Her farting is really quite impressive though

The 'bfed babies don't need to be winded' thing isn't true, my bfed baby certainly does. If she has wind she will writhe around uncomfortably and if winded burp almost immediately. If I don't, then likely she will be sick everywhere.

If your baby isn't uncomfortable or sick with wind and it doesn't come fairly easily up, but he's fine it coming out the other way (no colicky crying and raising the legs as it's trapped) then I wouldn't bother.

don't worry - he's a boy and will learn to burp on demand soon enough. Probably to the tune of the National Anthem.

Is he in pain with trapped wind? If not, then he's fine. Mine were never windy as babies.

My two week old is in the same boat finds it hard to bring up wind (burping) but farting come easily . Do I still need to to try and burp her?

My little man is the same but he can get himself in such a state when he farts yet going for a poo he barely makes a sound. I'm not sure how else to help as nothing I do works

How old is your baby? As a newborn my DD didn't burp and I couldn't understand it as I had been led to believe babies should be burped. But by 2-3 months she started to and now does it all the time!

My 8 week old formula-fed DD has always had trouble bringing the wind up, but sending it down is no problem for her, like a little lady. We used to spend up to half an hour trying to wind her, to no avail. The advice we were given is that if she falls asleep, don't even bother; she's clearly perfectly okay. If she is uncomfortable, sit her upright and try for a few minutes to burp her. If nothing comes up, she'll find a way to get it out eventually, although keeping her upright for 20-30 minutes will stop her being so uncomfortable. We've also found that no amount of burping or farting will stop her being sick, although all babies are different with things like this.

Just do it if she's uncomfortable, or it may help prevent little mouthfuls of sick after lying down. But if she's ok then she doesn't need it for now!

Mine is 6 weeks today. Sometimes you can try for ages and no burps. I'm hoping as he gets older it'll become less of a problem!

My boy is 3months Thursday and hardly brings wind up now he tends to do it himself when he's ready... Do I still need to wind him???

There is absolutely no need to wind a baby who isn't showing any signs of distress. Honestly. Some babies, usually but not always, bf ones, never need to be winded at all..

So no wriggling, crying., obvious pain? Then don't worry about winding!

I have never winded any of my three. This time around, the HV told me that she thinks that winding is unnecessary so I'm extra pleased I didn't bother!! My mum is obsessed with winding babies, however
