Aveeno shampoo for DS with eczema on scalp ??

Hi all,

We have been using Aveeno eczema therapy cream for DS's eczema and bathe him with plain water. But lately I have been noticing that his scalp is too itchy and there is a lot of powdery stuff ( that's the best I can describe it ) stuck to his hair... So I was wondering if I need to use more than just plain water to wash his hair...

Since the Aveeno range is working well on his skin eczema I was hoping to buy Aveeno baby shampoo... Has anyone ever used it on their DC?? Would you recommend it ??

Thanks :)

How old is he? With DD (8) we have found that the only thing that worked was a shampoo with selenium in it, but I'm not sure whether it's suitable for babies/toddlers.

Ah.... I should have mentioned it in my original post... He is 5 mo..

In that case, the cradle cap shampoos can sometimes help with eczema and many of them are fine to use on babies.

Or rub some olive oil on his scalp, leave it on while he's having his bath then wash off.

We haven't tried the Aveeno shampoo but you might find someone on here who has.

I would put Aveeno cream on his scalp where it's dry then wash it off in the bath. It'll wash out okay. My older boys (10 and 6) had something similar, seborrhoeic dermatitis, and they needed a prescription shampoo to shift it, I think it was caused by a fungal infection as they both got it at the same time.

Just solved this problem on my 10 month old. Obviously what worked for him might not work for you but...
Found that cradle cap shampoos made it worse, olive oil did nothing. But used an emollient cream to use as a shampoo, then aveeno lotion on the whole scalp afterwards when dry. This finally stopped it & it had got pretty bad. His hair was a bit slick after bath time but he didn't mind!
Also, only bathing about twice a week helps.

Dd has eczema - we have cycles of itchy scalp with cradle cap then itchy scalp as we've washed her hair Confused We occasionally use that dentinox stuff which does clear it but will aggravate the eczema. We use sunflower oil (we were told at baby massage that it soaks in better than olive?) one day - this lifts it a bit - so we comb it out a bit the next - then shampoo with water or dentinox. We only do baths once or twice a week. Haven't tried using the emollients. Will give that a go but they are all so chemically! Going to loiter hoping for more tips! X

Hi,
Stupid question... are you all in the states? I've not heard of Aveeno Shampoo.... very interested in it though. I have a 4 month old with ridiculous amounts of hair... and eczema...

Thanks
Emma

It's a brand for eczema Emma, you can buy it in Boots.

Aveeno shampoo worked brilliantly on my excema-prone baby at about the same age. In fact we still use it now. Thoroughly recommended here. It can be a pain to find in shops.

mumtosp · 17/03/2013 21:49

Emma Aveeno creams and lotions for adults are available in Boots but I haven't found the Aveeno baby range in Boots.... I've been led to believe that the Aveeno baby range is not available in UK. We ordered this from Amazon and it is dispatched from US..

StuntNun did you find the Aveeno baby range in Boots? If yes, can you please tell me which Boots store??

Thanks all for your replies... currently we only apply almond oil for his scalp but will try emollient as a shampoo :)

JacqueslePeacock do you remember where you bought the Aveeno shampoo from?

Can you ask your GP to put it n prescription for you? We have had DD1's Aveeno moisturiser and bath oil prescribed for the past 4 years. It's fab stuff.

StuntNun · 17/03/2013 23:43

I use the regular adult Aveeno stuff on myself and the kiddies.

JacqueslePeacock · 18/03/2013 10:39

I did what you did, actually - bought it online and had it delivered from the US. It was expensive but worth it (and lasted AGES as you only use such a tiny bit). I suspect the adult Aveeno shampoo, which is available from some Uk stockists, would be fine as well, but on such a small baby I didn't want to risk it.

mumtosp · 18/03/2013 21:24

JP same here... since the baby range is working so well on DS's eczema I'm too scared to try the adult range. Anyways, the GP gave me the adult cream today and I can see a bit of difference in the ingredients... so may not try it...
