My 6 week old doesn't make eye contact- should I be worried?

He gazes around and stares at lights or towards the window.

He looks at my face but not directly into my eyes; he hasn't smiled yet either.

I thought all these things should be happening by now. Can anyone reassure me?

Ds1 didn't smile til gone 7 weeks. At 6 weeks he seemed to go out of his way to avoid eye contact with me - liked staring at the bathroom tiles when I changed him, the cheese plant when I held him and nothing at all when I fed him.

I worried. a lot

4 weeks later he making much more eye contact ie doing what I thought babies did from birth. He was fine. 7 years later - still fine.

Please stop worrying and give it time. The babies in the adverts you see gazing adoringly at their mothers are older babies, not newborns.

As long as his eyes are fairly steady - if they shake rapidly or wander from side to side without ever stopping you should speak to your gp or hv!

I know this is an old post but I was wondering if you had an update. My son doesn’t make a lot of eye contact and it’s really concerning me. Thanks!
