Skinny jeans on young children?

Am I the only one who feels like they are grown up, miniature adult clothing?

If you agree, what age do you think they are appropiate?

Joggers are getting increasingly hard to get and the material that ours are is much stretchier than normal jeans that we have.

My DS is quite big and normal jeans just don't fit properly.

MrsMushroom · 13/03/2013 13:34

Joggers are everywhere!

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 13/03/2013 13:38

I don't really buy stuff online. :) He does have a lot of joggers already and he mostly gets put in those stretchy toddler wooly leggings. [http://compare.ebay.co.uk/like/170745580633?var=lv&ltyp=AllFixedPriceItemTypes&var=sbar&adtype=pla&crdt=0 These are the best idea ever and we use them lots]

I don't have a problem with skinny(ish) jeans on young kids though, they look better on kids than they do on adults.

Sorry that was a bad link.
Unisex comfy toddler/baby leggings

Children can't wear tracksuit bottoms every day and everywhere though, can they?

I think those who think children's jeans are a ridiculous example of selfishly putting style over their child's comfort have either never actually felt how stretchy they are, or have children so young that it really doesn't matter if they wear joggers in places that older people shouldn't ie a restaurant or party.

MrsMushroom · 13/03/2013 14:52

Shatners my DD is 8 and wears them and they're not THAT stretchy....she's a slim kid so they don't cling...but toddlers with chunky legs that make the jeans ruck up their legs in little wrinkles look uncomfortable...my 5 year old would refuse them as "hard". She's fussy though.

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 13/03/2013 14:56

They're not hard on my DS, the only ones that are are the normal jeans, maybe toddler ones are different material.

DaveMccave · 14/03/2013 11:46

I think they are more practical for kids than adults! I like the bright colours for kids, 5 year old dd has green and purple ones. I get what you mean about mini adult clothes. I was thrilled to get some kiddy style dungarees for dd last week in aged 6. (M&S if anyone's interested) Scandinavian clothes are the only ones that do 'kids' properly. H&M are great for this reason but they do lots of trendy stuff too.

MamaBlue4 · 14/03/2013 12:55

My ds & dd where them, and the jeggings my dd wears are so much easier on those rushed days.

I don't see anything wrong with "miniature adult clothing", if you were talking about belly tops and bikini sets for toddlers - which I've seen, then that's a different matter. Jeans are jeans and are suitable for ages.

I'm kind of a rock music lover, so my dc mostly wears blank jeans and random t-shirts. Not a big issue for me.

DTisMYdoctor · 14/03/2013 13:04

DS age 4 is really skinny, so I struggle to buy trousers for him. I don't like skinny jeans (which seem to be everywhere for boys as well as girls) because they look like they'd be really uncomfortable when he's running around playing. I despair when I need to buy him trousers as I usually only find him suitable trousers - adjustable waist, loose enough to play in without looking huge etc, reinforced knees always a bonus - in gap or boden and I'd quite like to buy some cheaper ones

DTisMYdoctor · 14/03/2013 13:05

As a side note on joggers - more and more often I find they have fake drawstrings which makes it hard to find some for skinny DS!

HelloKittyKatHello · 14/03/2013 13:08

I think it is more about the whole outfit as a whole. I don't, personally, like to see young preschool girls in something like black skinny jeans, with a leopard print top on and knee high black leather boots, with their ears pierced. As a whole, I think an outfit like that looks too grown up and not age appropriate. It isn't the skinny jeans I don't like, more the whole look.

Whereas, lets say some green skinny jeans, with a yellow spotty sweatshirt and some trainers or pumps on and I think the skinny jeans are look perfectly age appropriate. This is mostly how mine dress, my eldest is a skinny thing and even skinny jeans are pretty baggy on her, except one pair from H&M which are really skinny fit and are closer fitting on her. As part of an age appropriate outfit I can't see any issue with any style of jeans, they are just jeans!

SpringlingSpaniel · 14/03/2013 13:11

If they actually fit the child then they are perfectly comfortable and practical.

But just like adults, they don't suit everyone. OP if you saw a child struggling to climb in them I would imagine they were in a size too small or the child was not the type of shape that can wear skinnies without them being too tight.

My own two wear skinnies sometimes and are comfortable and can run and climb no problem.

NotAQueef · 14/03/2013 13:14

My 2.3 yo has loads of 'skinny fit' trousers +jeans. I bought some fetching skinny pillar box red chinos the other day, they look lovely. Eqyally his skinny jeans are very stretchy and robust therefore more pratical than his stiff cords or 'normal' jeans. I am loving the colours, he currently has red, burgundy snd turquoise ones.
He certainly doesn't look like any mini adult man I've ever seen outside of hoxton

MumofWombat · 14/03/2013 14:31

DS is a pretty wierd shape. He just doesn't have a bottom! For example he is 23 months old and there is still plenty of room in 6-12 months shorts. Size 1 falls off him the moment he takes a step. Joggers don't stay up on him, winter trousers have to have the adjustable elastic bits.
Last winter we had a pair of leggings that looked like skinny jeans. He wore them all the time - as it was an item of clothing that stayed up on him! I got a very judgypants lady do the catsbum mouth thing at me, she actually stopped me in Gatwick airport (on the way home to Oz), sneered and asked how could I put him in those skinny jeans. I took great delight in pointing out they were leggings and very soft and comfortable. She scuttled off!

MamaBlue4 · 14/03/2013 15:33

I agree with HelloKittyKatHello I think skinny jeans are perfectly fine, if the outfit as a whole isn't too outlandish.

My dd wears skinny jeans with jumpers or funky t-shirt and her little trainers or slip ons.

My ds wears skinny jeans, jumper or t-shirt and his vans.

I've seen girls around 5, wearing skinny jeans, with tight tops and boots with heels and handbags, way mature for her age.

Corygal · 14/03/2013 19:00

They can be adorable on toddlers.

KitchenandJumble · 15/03/2013 01:21

I'm with you, OP. I personally think skinny jeans look far too adult on young children. I don't really care how other people dress their children, just expressing my own preference.

Then again, I think skinny jeans look horrendous on most adults too. Grin

LittleEdie · 15/03/2013 01:55

They look ok with a loose top or short dress. With you OP if we're talking about with a tight t shirt or vest top.

xMinerva · 15/03/2013 05:03

There is far more practical, comfortable and less restricting clothes out there for young children.

I hate jeans on young children and babies. My ds1 is nearly 4 and has never worn a pair of jeans, skinny or otherwise.

MrsMushroom · 15/03/2013 08:58

I agree xMinerva. They look restrictive and they ARE, my friend's 3 year old is always in them and he's a chunky toddler with proper thighs etc...he can't even squat down to look at a puddle properly because his silly skinny jeans stop him.

BabyMakesTheBellyGoRound · 17/03/2013 08:29

My children always wear skinny jeans and if they are restrictive then they are probably ill-fitting yes Next I am looking at you .

I don't understand how they are adult, they are more practical than dresses and jogging bottoms, which seem to be huge lately. Leggings,I love them too.

AThingInYourLife · 17/03/2013 08:36

Skinny jeans are great for skinny children.

DD1 (nearly 5) is a right skinny malinks and I really struggle to get trousers that fit her.

Skinnies and jeggings look great and are really hard wearing and practical. She's a climber, so they need to be.

AThingInYourLife · 17/03/2013 08:39

If a child can't bend over because his trousers are too small his parents are not dressing him properly.

5madthings · 17/03/2013 08:40

mrsmushroom your friend obviously needs to buy clothes that actually fit her son then.

I was at soft play yesterday ds4"s bday party 17kids i am still recovering

Dd wore skinny jeans and was having a blast. She is only 26mths and all ds4's friends are 4-5 and yet she was in there with all the big kids climbing and playing. Her jeans certainly werent restrictive.

Any clothing that is restrictive for a child is not great and i wouldnt put my children in them. But skinny jeans are fine and look lovely if they fit properly.

Its the fit of the clothes that makes thwm restrictive, clothes that are too baggy can be just as restrictive as ones that are too small/tight. And yes its the style of the whole outfit that can make clothing look too 'adult'
