Skinny jeans on young children?

nappyaddict · 12/03/2013 15:18

Am I the only one who feels like they are grown up, miniature adult clothing?

If you agree, what age do you think they are appropiate?

Skinny jeans are just a description used to describe a cut of jean, rather than boot cut or straight cut. I don't think they turn children into mini adults.

In our house skinny jeans are normal jeans.

Locketjuice · 12/03/2013 15:47

It's all my 1 year old wears, looks better than some baby jeans that look like he will take off in the slightest bit of wind Smile

MadCap · 12/03/2013 15:49

These are what I'm talking about. She was scrabbling around softplay yesterday quite happily.

DS2 has a pair of quite skinny jeans. He wears them when I can't handle him climbing off/over everything. Grin

ShatnersBassoon · 12/03/2013 15:54

They're no different to any other shape of jeans if you're judging them on how like adult clothing they are. Plain jeans, sweatshirts, shirts, leggings, chinos etc are all worn by adults and children. I'm not sure why any practical clothing should be unsuitable for children simply because an adult could wear a scaled up version.

CMOTDibbler · 12/03/2013 15:55

Most skinny jeans have loads of stretch in them, so are actually much more practical than normal jeans. My legging loving 6 year old ds won't wear any jeans but skinnies as they 'don't let me be flexible'.

They are also the only trousers for boys that come in colours other than camo or gloop

Eskino · 12/03/2013 16:01

By far the most inappropriate clothing for children must be clothes with media characters on (TV, Disney et al). If you dress your child in Thomas/postman pat/cars/hello kitty etc, You're basically pimping hiring them out as billboards.

Makes skinny jeans look harmless

MadCap · 12/03/2013 16:06

CMOT Arf at camo or gloop. Never a truer word etc...

HappyAsEyeAm · 12/03/2013 16:06

DS1 (5yo) says he finds them uncomfortable - I think its because he's used to straight leg jeans, soft chino type trousers and soft ribbed waist trousers. He just won't wear them. He isn't shy of saying what is comfortable and what isn't! He is also talking a lot about only liking the feet of soft warm things on his skin eg thermal vests, brushed cotton etc - I don't know where this will lead!

I agree with skinnies being practical for tucking into wellies, not getting wet on the bottoms though. But its such a shame that the only coloured jeans you can get for boys now are skinnies.

5madthings · 12/03/2013 16:07

cmot you can get somw really lovely colours at the moment. Primark had some good ones as well the other week. The green and yellow ones i got ftom m&s were in the girls section but they are unisex imo and i would put a boy in them.

ToTeachOrNotToTeach · 12/03/2013 16:08

I don't like skinny jeans on children either but it looks like I'm in the mi
nority!

nappyaddict · 12/03/2013 16:11

TTONTT

What age would you buy them from?

OP posts:
sjupes · 12/03/2013 16:13

my DD has wore them for years i have no problems with them, soft play is definitely not the right sort of enviroment for them tho Hmm joggys/leggings for my two when we go.

my friends partner refuses to buy them for their almost 3 year old DD for the same reason as you OP - too grown up looking.

CMOTDibbler · 12/03/2013 16:19

5madthings - he is rocking the turquoise from Primark (though they have come up a bit small tbh), and a lush burgundy pair from M&S. I need some scarlet ones as he had those last year from Next and they looked fab.

Pancakeflipper · 12/03/2013 16:19

My DS1 wears them. We need ones with an adjustable waist band because he is super skinny.
On him they look like normal jeans.

Stick him in a pair of normal jeans and the excess material around the bum area looks ridiculous.

He's grateful for skinny jeans.

fufflebum · 12/03/2013 16:22

Suit both my slim children, rather jealous I cannot wear them as my legs are too fat!

Do you think the same or t-shirts and pyjamas? Adults and kids wear these too........

5madthings · 12/03/2013 16:23

Oh yes i saw the burgandy ones in m&s! And i agree primark come up small but they are very cheap. The m&s ones were £10 which i thought was quite reasonable.

Gap do good colours as well.

Not sure how my dd in bright pea green skinny jeans from m&s and an elmo the cookie monster top from h&m can look too grown up....

ToTeachOrNotToTeach · 12/03/2013 16:36

No idea. Child is currently 4 and don't currently like that kind of thing on her. It does look like I'm the only one though!

brettgirl2 · 12/03/2013 17:52

They dont look like skinny jeans on my daughter cos she's really slight so they arent tight. Other trousers fall down. I'm not intending to squeeze chubbier dd2 into them however so I'm probably with you op at least to some point

sweetkitty · 12/03/2013 18:11

Are they not liked on the inference that skinny = sexy and if an adult wears skinny jeans they are trying to be sexy.

Skinny refers to the cut and the amount if material used. Those who don't like them, do you dress your daughters in leggings? They are "skinnier" than skinny jeans Grin

Leggings are a nightmare for us as to get the length usually means the waist is too big and they fall down Hmm at least skinny jeans have adjustable waists although they usually moan about the waist being uncomfy. The DDs love leggings as well Hmm

pictish · 12/03/2013 18:21

My dd is 4 and currently wearing leggings for 18 mnths - 2 yrs. They are a little short, but in order to fit her waist, hips and bum, that's how they have to be.
Skinnies often have adjustable waists.
Ordinary jeans just swamp her.

Xiaoxiong · 12/03/2013 19:08

DS has a pair of grey jeggings. They're brilliant because they're stretchy enough to fit over his big cloth nappy bum, and go inside his wellies so he stays dry at the park.

I don't see the problem with "trendy" clothing if it's clean, fits ok, is age and weather appropriate and isn't advertising something.

sweetkitty DS also has a couple of pairs of leggings from polarn o pyret which have adjustable waists.

Bananasinfadedpjs · 12/03/2013 19:26

My DD has just been bought a pair as a present, think they are from Gap.

I've always bought her wide-legged stuff in the past, but I was totally won over when I saw how practical they were for tucking into wellies. They looked lovely on her, as she is very slim and tall. They don't cling to her legs or anything (as I said, she is v slim), I don't think I would like them if they were all clingy. They just looked like normal trousers.
I like practical clothing for children, and they seem exactly that.

MrsMushroom · 12/03/2013 19:32

I don't mind them on children who are over 8. I HATE them on nappy wearing babies and toddlers. Their little bottoms look ridiculous.

damppatchnot · 12/03/2013 19:33

My dc wear skinny jeans or cords

I like them to wear trendy clothes but not adult ones ie black, inappropriate slogans, cropped tops, barbie pink or skull slogans

My ds wears ted baker stuff it's trendy but smart and dd wears debenhams designer mainly trousers pretty tops and jackets

Me? Primark!
