do you have funny "principles"?

that are actually pathetic attempts to assuage your overall guilt about your lack of parenting prowess? I was thinking about dds' upcoming birthdays. Every year so far (5 for dd1 3 for dd2) I have made their birthday cakes. I come from a family where food was always home-made and bought cakes were considered devil's work, a waste of money, and generally lacking in wholesomeness and flavour. (now that we've all left home mum contents herself with making cakes for WI events and stocking up the freezer for our visits - you get the picture). I could never reach my mother's dizzy maternal now grandmotherly standards but 5 years ago I decided birthday cakes were non-negotiable. A random choice, but something I felt I could do. I wondered if anyone else does this and if so what about and why?

lol mrsbadger..it's just part of d.h's culture..and a goodthing i think..we have a smaller main dish..so it's good to spread it out..
usually just a pile of calamari or cheese/olives/salamis etc or my favourite..greek salad..
and the not so sophisticated thing is it's always with a glass of 'rakia' ( harsh eastern europe brandy)

GDG · 05/05/2006 15:04

pmsl!! soooo true!

jamsam · 05/05/2006 15:04

im struggling to think of any principles i have left, let alone funny ones..does no shoes in the house count??

oh, i know, guns, i wont allow my ds's to have guns or water pistols, so they use sticks instead!

babyonboard · 05/05/2006 15:06

shoes in the house is one thing i don't mind..well..i mind if dp does it..but don't make guests take theirs off...

babyonboard · 05/05/2006 15:08

teehee jamsam..bet they try to make bows and arrows..you are just denying them the benefits of evolution!

lmao

Hallgerda · 05/05/2006 17:08

jamsam, if you've noticed a spate of missing shoelaces, they probably already have made bows and arrows!

I insist on shoes staying on in the house, so it's not treated like a soft play area.

handlemecarefully · 05/05/2006 17:13

Yes - on the party thing; I have to hold my childrens' parties at home - rather than as I see it (with apologies to everyone else) cop out and hold a soft play area party etc. I labour over every detail trying to get it perfect for my lo's.

Daft really because the children would probably prefer the latter!

handlemecarefully · 05/05/2006 17:14

...that definitely falls into the category of my pathetic attempt to assuage my guilt over my general lack of parenting prowess!

PinkKerPlink · 05/05/2006 17:23

I absolutely insist my two dear children have organic homemade vegetable juice for breakfast

handlemecarefully · 05/05/2006 21:57

Poor little mites...

WestCountryLass · 05/05/2006 22:19

Jamsam, am pmp about the no guns rule. Same here but DS has numerous light sabers and wooden swords....

WestCountryLass · 05/05/2006 22:19

I also have a no Bratz rule.

geekgrrl · 05/05/2006 22:21

ooooh yes no Bratz here, either. Even a Bratz colouring book given as a present went straight into the bin when dd wasn't looking. Gross, gross, gross.

thewomanwhothoughtshewasahat · 05/05/2006 22:23

cod - what manner of logic made you correct "lob"?!

NotAnOtter · 05/05/2006 22:25

no guns in our house and feel a failure if a child has shop bought birthday cake ( so far i HAVE done 34 kids birthdays!)
Fairly crap otherwise ( oh i do limit all screen activity ) sssshhhhh!

Tortington · 05/05/2006 22:30

my mum taught me how to be a fun mum and not be up your own arse ( thats before she went a bit gaga)

what i would never do is the terminable catholic " we don't talk about sex - if we dont talk about it - it doesnt happen"

thats the only thing.

my husband is of the school - if we can afford it buy it - becuase he was brought up dirt poor - we werw quite financially stable actually but as a single parent my mum was as tight as a fishes arse - still is. so we were more of a "why waste money" mentality - and his family were 2 wish we could waste money"

now he just wastes money - on everyone. which is cool when its me. Grin

that had absolutley nothing to do with the question but ive typed it now

Socci · 05/05/2006 22:32

I do not make homemade birthday cakes - ever ( might try next year)
We eat mainly organic meals cooked from scratch
I don't care if my children eat chocolate and don't think sugar is bad as long as in moderation
I bf for 2 years+
We have Barbie (draw the line at Bratz though Grin)

Tortington · 05/05/2006 22:38

thought of a coherent one.

my kids dont get bullied. i was bullied horrifically for years - so when they say xxxx did something today - i never said " oh she must be jealous of you" or " she's not nice ignore her"
i alsways said
"first thing tomorrow - go over and knock her out ( colloquial)"

it worked for the most part.

thewomanwhothoughtshewasahat · 05/05/2006 22:41

pmsl at your first post custy

OP posts:
fattiemumma · 06/05/2006 18:32

same as custardo's first post. i am the eldest of 10 so we never had any money. what we got we were gratefull of as it didnt happen too often. we usually had about £20 spent on our birthdays as thast all they could afford.

i decided that the ruke with my kids woudl be "if i could, i would" so they always get spoiled rotten on their birthdays and they get taken to Zoo's and stuff that i never did.

sometimes i quetsin whether im doing the right thing as to be honest i alwasy appreciated things and i dont want my kids growing up Expecting to be bought things

Cam · 06/05/2006 18:46

I've got a funny "principle" which is that I won't have a video player/recorder or DVD thingy or playstations or computer games"

Don't know why as I'm the only person in the Western World without such a device.

Some of dd's friends mothers say to her "Have you really not got any vids or dvd's or playstation2 or whatever?"

I think they feel sorry for her and think we're weird.

But we do go to the cinema regularly and she watches normal kids programmes on tv and looks things up on the computer and has her own email address.

I've just got a thing about electronic games. And watching films on the small screen. And watching films over and over again because you "own" it.

Tortington · 07/05/2006 02:48

i dont mind a mess - its a principle by default.

as long as its a constructive mess - from doign something

Tortington · 07/05/2006 02:48

i swear if i find another fkin yoghurt pot am gonna shove it up someones arse - thats not constructive
