went to the animal fair
the birds and the beasts were there
the big baboon by the light of the moon
was combing his auburn hair
the monkey fell out of his bunk
and slid down the elephant's trunk
the elephant sneezed
and feel on his knees
and what became of the monkey, monkey, monkey, monk...
Must get out more Wink

I went to the animal fair

The big baboon by the light of the moon was combing his auburn hair.
The monkey fell out of his bunk
He slid down the elephant's trunk,
The elephant sneezed
And fell on his knees,
And that was the end of the monkey, monkey, monkey monkey.....

I remember it as:

I went to the animal fair
The birds and beasts were there
The big baboon
by the light of the moon
was combing his golden hair.
The monkey fell out of his bunk
Slid down the elephant's trunk
The elephant sneezed
and fell on his knees
and what became of the mon-key mon-key mon-key

(And if you have enough kids, you divide them into two groups and one keeps going 'mon-key-mon-key-mon-key-mon' while the other sings it again... and then you swap... and so on and so on ad nauseam! I used to help with the Brownies!)

FOund this good words site to old songs from my childhood
www.whirligig-tv.co.uk/radio/lyrics1.htm

I found these words to it but I know others. Still looking

"I went to the animal fair.
The birds and the beasts were there.
The gay baboon
by the light of the moon
was combing the elephant's hair!"
Action Rhyme: A good, early animal action rhyme is
"Round and round the garden
like a teddy bear.
One step, two step.
Tickle him under there!
No child can resist that one

Ellbell · 30/04/2006 15:45

Blimey... about 4 full versions in the time it took me to type that! Sorry for repetition.

Beabea · 30/04/2006 15:46

We went to the animal fair
The birds and beasts were there
The big baboon by the light of the moon
Was combing his auburn hair
The monkey jumped out of his bunk
Slid down the elephants truck weeeee
The elephant sneezed and fell on his knees
What became of the monkey monkey monkey
