Hmmm, can't remember but once they could hold the bottle they were on to cups. Moved off bottles at about 10-11 months I think.

I did'nt introduce a cup till 6 months, dd did'nt hold a bottle till at least 10 months.

i don't think cruel is the owrd, just inappropriate. He probbly won't be able to use it properly, so won't get his proper feed IMO
At this age his tongue will naturally roll around the teat to feed. He won't be able to do this with a cup so won't be able to feed properly

actually, that does sound a bit mean, so maybe it is a bit cruel...

it was just cos as i was browsing the baby aisle in asda today there were cups that said suitable from 3 months, but i wouldn't have thought they would have been able to as this age.

I probably would introduce a cup around 5-6 months just with some water in, but still continue with bottles for milk feeds.

It's recommended that children are off bottles and onto cups by 12 months though.

Mine were utterly pathetic at it for ages and ages and ages.

They're now quite competent small children, so it doesn't seem to have hampered them much.

Ds was mix-fed, and he could hold his bottle well before 6m, whereas dd was breastfed and she only started holding bottles/beakers about 3m after ds had done.

i havent got a clue!!!! im sure ds1 was holding a bottle or beaker at about 12 months, but ds2 was definatly holding a beaker by 8 or 9 months..its not something i can quickly recall...unlike the first escape attempt!

It is absolutely not cruel to introduce it.
However babies really find it difficult to get large quantities of fluid from a beaker. So I fyou are just letting him have a play and introducing some water this is a fantastic idea, but would ot recommend it instead of a bottle at this age.
I introduced one to the wee chap at 4 months and he could drink himself by six months.

i suppose i was thinking that you wanted to use it to feed the baby ie change from bottle to cup so i was worried that baby wouldn't get enough feed.
i suppose it si fine...but why? i am sure they don't need much more than milk for 6months or so..

both mine were imposs to get to use a cup till about 8months.
ds1 wouldn't take a bottle and it did my head in trying to get him to drink out of something as i was goijng back to work. I tried and tried to get him to drink for about 3 months and it was horrible.
ds2 i started a cup about 3 weeks ago- he's 8.5months now, and this week he started to drink properlyh out of it, just a bit of water

ds2 (will be 1 next week) is very adept with his tommy tippee cup - pulls up the spout and drinks himself. He'll also drink out of a cup we are holding. However, I am not going to drop the bottles because I need the cuddles! So long as you brush their teeth after their bottle feed it's fine.

DS is nearly 15 months old and still has a bottle at night before bed, but I started getting him used to taking liquid from a cup (no spout) at about 5 or 6 months - he drinks all his water or diluted juice during the day from a plastic glass which he has been holding and drinking from himself since he was about 10 or 11 months old. I skipped the sippy cup completely.

Never had a bottle, but could hold his own cup (for water) from about 7.5 months. Will only take a quick swig from it every so often when having his food - I don't give it to him in the expectation that he will take on much liquid. I just put a bit in at a time.

DS was a nightmare for drinking water out of anything until he was about 10months. I tried all sorts of juices and must have bought one of every cup going, it wasnt until i found the right cup for him (cheap jobby from swag shop for £2 for two, i cringe to think of the money I wasted on all the others!) and since then he drinks water by the bucket load and at 16 months he is now drinking from a regular cup as long as I hold it

was just talking to a woman who gave her baby a cup from 10 weeks and she could hold it by herself at 12 weeks. that's one very clever baby!!

DD started using a cup from about 4 months for water, not milk. We used a Doidy cup, rather than a spouted cup as she struggled with them.

holding (and using) a beaker/cup with handles at 9 months
bottle at 12 months.

we didn't introduce a beaker/cup until 6/7 months anyway when he dropped some of his milk feeds

most people seem to recommend the tommee tippee easiflow cups as the best. they aren't too expensive either!!

Ds held his bottle at 6 months, he had handles on them which helped. I gave him a cup for water around the same time.
He stopped his night time bottle at 15m.

He started off with tommee tippee basic cup, and he had no problems. He now has a cup which I found in Sainsburys - its 99p and is EXCELLENT! It is made by 'little wonders', easy to clean, non spill, and is similar shape to a steady cup. The lid can be taken off later too and used as a 'big boy' cup! I bought 6 the other day to stock up on them!

Mine still can't at 11.5 months but can hold her own cup... weird...
