Bunk bed, from what age for top bunk?

What age did you put your DCs in a bunk bed - how old was the one using the top? A lot of recommendations now are for 6+, but that seems quite old to me? Thinking about putting our 4 yr old in one but need a reality check of whether we are being under anxious. Thanks.

Dd was four. No issues at all. Some of her friends though would come over and either get freaked out by being up high or mess around hanging off the top or jumping off the steps.

So I guess it depends on the individual child

I think our DD was about 4 too.

My DD1 stays in a top bunk when she is at her grandmas, and has since she was 4.

The main problem is her taking a thousand toys up there, which you can't really see until you come to tuck her in (think lego and sticklebricks). She loves it.

We didn't let DD till she was 6.

I bought when DS1 was 4.9yo and DS2 was 2.0yo and regretted and sold after 1 month. DS1 was not comfortable to get down the ladder (this could have been fixed by a stair type ladder),but more importantly DS1 would encourage DS2 to climb up and DS2 would get very unhappy if I don't allow. Eventually it got too much of teasing to get up there and me chasing them that I just could not cope anymore. I consider getting bunks in the future again but only when DS1 is 6 and above.

6y for top bunk but less (4) for cabin bed. The recommendations were spot on for my two.

We got bunks when the DCs were just turned 5 and 7. We were a bit uneasy about letting youngest DC sleep in the top one for the first year or so.

We enforced strict rules from Day 1, no kneeling up or standing on the top bunk, no playing on the ladder, no leaning over the rail and never more than one person at a time in the top bunk, I tell friends that play upstairs the rules too. We have the option to take away the ladder and move one DC to another room if the rules are not stuck to and they know it.
