DS has a large purple birthmark on his upper thigh. Over the past week a small patch of red has appeared within the birthmark which I think is just dry skin as it is rough to touch however he does not have dry skin anywhere else. Should I go the doctor or am I being paranoid?

Hi there. Our dd has a port wine stain birthmark on her face. I would have any changes checked over by a doctor. It could well be dry skin but sometimes a birthmark can ulcerate.

Have you heard of the birthmark support group? Their website has lots of information about different types of birthmark.

Hi

As Sam said, its wise to get any changes checked by your GP.

How old is your DS? Is he a tiny baby because it might still he developing. Mine has a strawberry haemangioma birthday on his wrist/hand. I went to GP on advice of HV when he was about 6 weeks old because it had become bumpy but it was normal for this type.

They can become dry. DS's birthmark developed a scabby patch for a while. I just keep it moist with Vaseline and the scabby patch cleared.

DS is 8mo, it's port wine birthmark and small patch is less than size of a 1p coin and eels rough.
