The Incredible Years

Hi Mums!

Has anyone else been using the incredible years book or been involved in a course like the one I have taken in my childrens' nursery school? I am a mum of twins and would be interested in what others have thought or just to have a general discussion about this parenting bible?

It's running at our school. I declined because those courses always leave me very depressed. Could let you know feedback in a few weeks if I hear anything from others.

I did it a few years ago. I don't rate it, it's hard-core behaviourism (reward charts the answer to everything). And very doctinaire - it's really 'my way or the highway'. On the plus side it was good to focus on things like playing with your child, listening to your child and so on.

However in my case I was referred by my health visitor because I had a child with extreme behaviours (later diagnosed with an autistic spectrum disorder), and the course is really aimed at NT children -- for example time out makes that child to completely apeshit and is quite countproductive, reward charts don't work at all (and goodness knows I have tried!).

So I wouldn't say it could never be good, and there may be people who have found it really helpful. They just aren't me.
