6 wk check. what should of happened?

DS is now 7 wks. when i booked the app. i was told it would last 30 mins. i arrived at gps to be told he's running late (no surprise there) so to wait which is fine.

Got called in DS got checked over rather quick then gp turned to me and said and your fine yes? i said yes thinkin there would braun more questions but that's it. were in there 10 mins.

sure i remember with Dd questions about periods returning, stitches, blood pressure check and contraception advice.

That sounds dreadful. When I did this a few weeks ago the appointment was in three stages.

Stage 1 with a maternity care assistant (I think?):

• baby weighed, head circumference and length measured
• chat about feeding and any other issues

Stage 2 with a doctor:

• baby given an all-over check
• contraception chat and any other issues
• offered to check stitches but no need

Stage 3 with a nurse:

• immunisations

My surgery does the check at 8 weeks rather than 6 so they combine the jabs in with it, which works well. We were in for about 30-45 minutes total.

MY 6 week check was the same OP and that was nearly 12 years ago.

just felt a bit rushed tbh. i feel ok so have no major problem still get the occasional pain after 2nd degree tear which I've read is normal. wanted to discuss contraception with gp but was ushered out!!!

That's not right op, you should complain, but I know you've got far more to think about with a 6 week old.

Mine checked stitches, asked about mood/stress etc and asked about contraception.

DS had a separate appointment with his first jabs after it.

Make another appointment with gp and highlight areas not covered that you wanted to discuss. Just because they was behind it shouldn't be you who is pushed out the door. Bad gp should know better.

They do 8 week checks for babies at mine and that included:

• head circumference, length, listened to heart, hip movement, questions about hearing, general well being and any concerns

• first jabs

• My check at 6 weeks included reading labour notes, offered to check stitches, chat about contraception, chat about Bfeeding, general how I'm feeling/any concerns

I felt my 6 WK check was good as whilst I didn't especially have a difficult labour/baby, it was nice for someone to ask how I was coping, to remind me to make sure I sleep and leave all the housework, acknowledge pain from stitches etc. which is probably all part of the PND questioning.

Just go back and make an appoint with someone else, you shouldn't feel like that, having a baby is a big deal and should be treated as such.

Ours wasn't 30 mins. I had mine separate to DD. For her gp checked her startle reflex, looked in ears, mouth eyes. Checked hips and knees. Als checked her shoulders (although that might have been coz she had shoulder dysocia when she was born) He didn't weigh or do head circ but HV had done that previous week.

My check gp went through MH questions (again might have been due to existing MH issues but I'm sure supposed to ask everyone) Talked to me about contraception and checked my episiotomy.

Our 6 week check here sounds like yours.

Check over of the baby (hips, head, reflexes)!and then cursory 'how are you' for the mother, probably with the expectation that you'll bring up any issues. I had no checks (had 3a tear with DD) and I was the one to bring up contraception after DS.

Jabs are done at a separate appointment with the nurse.

I had post natal depression with dd1 and at my 6 week check with dd2 (2 weeks ago)I was told I don't get checked anymore that hasn't happened for over 20 years!?!?!? I found that difficult to believe as I had a 6 week check 4 years ago. Maternity care in my area is so poor, I've tried to get in touch with pals but they don't return phone calls.
