Did i make a mistake?

Hi. I know this is a silly thing to worry about, but well i worry.

I named my baby Evie, and everybody keeps commenting on how awful it is that she does not have a proper name. When people ask her name and i say Evie they always ask what is it short for and are surprised when it is not short for anything.
Even my mum says i should have called her Eve or Evelyn, but we didn't really like those names. She says in the future Evie will feel stupid because she only has a nickname.

But i like her name a lot, i am called Jennifer and everybody calls me Jenn, so i didn't think it mattered.

Have i made a mistake? I nearly cried when somebody told me Evie would sound silly on an adult.

It is a lovely name!
I read your post on another thread and I thought how loevely that would be if I ever had a girl!!
i love it!

BadHair · 13/01/2004 20:04

Ds1's name is an abbreviation of another name and everyone thinks his "real" name is the long one. I really don't like the long name, and I get quite snippy with people who assume that its abbreviated.

JJ · 13/01/2004 20:05

Jenn, I think Evie is lovely. It's not going to sound silly on an adult... trust me on this one. It sounds very glamorous to me.

FWIW, my parents and everyone I know have always called me by my nickname which happens to be my mumsnet alias. Most people don't even know my "real" name as I don't use it at all.

JJ

Hi Jenn, Evie was one the names I wanted if DH had backed down and not insisted he name our second daughter!! I think its lovely and I don't think it will sound silly at all, quite glamourous actually. If you and Evie like it thats all that matters

Jimjams · 13/01/2004 20:06

I was told the same when we named my son 4 and a half years ago. Now his name- which wasn't a "proper" name has become a "proper" name. I think Evie's a lovely name.

Remember jack wasn't a "proper" name until recently- and now there are loads of jacks.

zebra · 13/01/2004 20:07

I don't think it matters, Jenn, don't think it was a mistake. Plenty of people just name their kids simple short names, nowadays, Tom not Thomas, Ben not Benjamin, etc.

pie · 13/01/2004 20:07

There you go, both JJ and I think its glamorous so it must be.

princesspeahead · 13/01/2004 20:10

I know a very beautiful and glam woman with that name (although she spells it differently - Yvie - )looks like Catherine Deneuve - I think it is great, and unusual but not wierd IYKWIM. Well chosen!

popsycal · 13/01/2004 20:11

btw my ds has the long version of a name but is always called the short version(except when i have 'mammy's cross face')
Sometimes I thikn we should have just called him the short version!
I really do like Evie if I should have a dd!

Candie · 13/01/2004 20:11

I think that Evie is a really pretty name. I know a little girl called Evie who is now 7 and it really suits her. I cannot see anything wrong with an adult called Evie. If I had a girl it is a name I would have strongly considered.
My sister is also called Jennifer and we have always called her Jenny. My ds1s name is Alex and everyone assumes his name is Alexander, but it is just Alex. My friends dh is also called Alex. I don,t see why people would comment on Evie not being a proper name. I think its a really nice name. Try not to wory. I personally think you made a brilliant choice.

popsycal · 13/01/2004 20:11

and i get called popsy and thay bears no resemblance to my real name!!

Kayleigh · 13/01/2004 20:14

I don't think she'll feel stupid at all. And if it really bothered her she could always call herself "Eve". But I'm sure she won't, I think it's a gorgeous name.

GeorginaA · 13/01/2004 20:16

"I nearly cried when somebody told me Evie would sound silly on an adult."

Oh ffs... some people are just plain evil - what a rude and horrible thing to say to someone with a new baby! I'm surprised you didn't say, "well at least I didn't name her x" (where x is either the commenter's name or their darling child).

I agree with everyone else - Evie sounds a really beautiful and graceful name.

bobthebaby · 13/01/2004 20:27

FWIW I wish I had called ds by the shortened version I use rather than the long version. My MIL insists on using this name, which pees me off. Sometimes will rellies I think that it's just that they want to call the child something different from mum just for the sake (to have their special name that only they use) and by choosing an already shortened version they can't do that.

Evie is a great name, and even if it wasn't she is your daughter and you can do what you like. I heard a mum call out to her kid "Tryton, come here" the other day - now that's a silly name.

Hulababy · 13/01/2004 20:40

I think it is a lovely girl's name JennH. Names won't sound silly as an adult either as she will grow up with that name and will simply be an Evie to everyone. Really, no one will find it unusual at all by the time they grow up.

GlitterGirly · 13/01/2004 20:41

I love that name, so pretty. Ignore them, some people can be so insensitive.

marialuisa · 13/01/2004 20:48

It's lovely. As for not having a proper name, says who? My mum regrets naming youngest sis Elena, wishes she'd just gone with Ellie as that's all she's ever been called.

emmatmg · 13/01/2004 20:51

Love it too and so much so that if we ever had a girl I think I might just pinch your little bundles name

suedonim · 13/01/2004 21:29

I know two Evies. The first Evie is 7yrs old and the other is well into her 60's and each of them suits the name very well.

eddm · 13/01/2004 21:30

It's a lovely name so don't let anyone upset you. She could even use Eve or Evelyn as a nickname if she likes when she's older ? if we can shorten long names don't see why someone with a short name can't go long. (Or vice versa. My name was 'lengthened' to Katie when I was small).

Pimpernel · 13/01/2004 21:40

I think Evie is a lovely name too. And according to National Statistics , it was the 61st most popular girl's name in England and Wales in 2003 - so I don't think it will sound silly at all.

CountessDracula · 13/01/2004 21:44

It's a beautiful name! Stand by your convictions and tell them to mind their own business.

popsycal · 13/01/2004 21:50

oh pimpernel - thans for that link - my ds is VERY common!!

Lou33 · 13/01/2004 22:06

I thikn Evie is beautiful.

codswallop · 13/01/2004 22:08

I always would choose a fullname and then shorten it - but thats my taste - we each have our own chance to name our kids
