Did i make a mistake?

Hi. I know this is a silly thing to worry about, but well i worry.

I named my baby Evie, and everybody keeps commenting on how awful it is that she does not have a proper name. When people ask her name and i say Evie they always ask what is it short for and are surprised when it is not short for anything.
Even my mum says i should have called her Eve or Evelyn, but we didn't really like those names. She says in the future Evie will feel stupid because she only has a nickname.

But i like her name a lot, i am called Jennifer and everybody calls me Jenn, so i didn't think it mattered.

Have i made a mistake? I nearly cried when somebody told me Evie would sound silly on an adult.

I have a friend with a daughter called Evie (age 3) and it suits her perfectly and I have never thought it to be a shortened or not 'proper' name - how ridiculous!!

Moomin · 13/01/2004 22:18

Evie is a gorgeous name and is definitely on our list if we have another girl. Ignore the miserable wotsits who have put a downer on your name choice - what gives them the right?!!
Stick by your guns - it was the name you chose over ALL others, so be proud of it. People are very short-sighted, not to mention ignorant if things don't fit in with what they expect, and as lots of people on this thread have said, someo fmost popular and loveliest names these days are what other names were shortened to in the past. It's a beautiful name

Clarinet60 · 13/01/2004 22:40

I agree. Evie is a great name in its own right and one that would have been high on my list if I'd had a girl. Ignore them all!

Agree it's lovely and she can call herself Eve when she's older if she prefers that. BUT, do know of a Maddy who is just that, not Madaleine. Think I would prefer to have more options than just Mad when I'm older.

marthamoo · 13/01/2004 23:17

Evie is a gorgeous name, take no notice

Festivefly · 13/01/2004 23:21

Evie its a beautiful name it truly is. Everybody has a comment no matter what name. Just take a big breath and say to yourself well i obviously have better taste

nutcracker · 13/01/2004 23:45

If my ds3 had been a girl we were going to call her Evie Grace, so i think it's a beautiful name

fisil · 14/01/2004 07:25

Evie is beautiful - it was on my shortlist! We called ds by a very unusual name which is unlikely ever to make the top 100, but an abbreviation of it is. So when we tell his name we have had people saying "oh, but actually you call him xxxx, yes?" (giving the abbreviated name) and we have to say, "no, that's his name."

My linguist friend had a baby at the same time as me, and explained that people learn new words by having a hook to put them on in their mind. That is why when you say your baby is called Daniel the usual response is "oh, my uncle's called Daniel." People are trying to place it somewhere so that they can remember it. Therefore with unusual names people feel a little affronted that they can't place it. I can see this is true as I had someone call ds Milo. His name begins with F and sounds nothing like Milo. When I said his name, she said, "oh, I knew it was something unusual."

alibubbles · 14/01/2004 09:35

Evie was one of the most popular new entries for names this year, along with Ellie, so some could say that is not a proper name too.

Go with what you like, I think Evie sounds very sweet and I know a 4 year old called Ev§ie and it suits her!

FairyMum · 14/01/2004 09:41

I think Evie is a lovely name. Wasn't aware it wasn't supposed to be a "real" name. People are called all sorts of things these days, I wouldn't worry.....

lazyeye · 14/01/2004 09:51

I wanted Evie if I had a girl.........pple always have opinions about names. I think its rude - I'd never comment on a name even if I didn't like it!

aloha · 14/01/2004 09:51

My ds is at nursery with a particularly bright and beautiful little girl called Evie (aged 2) and another little girl called Eve. So it's not even particularly unusual. I think people should keep their impertinent, rude comments to themselves. What business is it theirs what you call your dd? If they have kids they can call them whatever they like, and they have zero right to comment on yours. It's one thing (though IMO still rude) to comment unasked before a child is named, but afterwards there is no excuse at all IMO. I think the answer to these people (if you can be bothered with it) is a good firm and very chilly, "Well, WE like it.".

Browbeaten · 14/01/2004 09:58

I think Evie is beautiful. If my ds had been a girl it was one name we were considering. It is also a name my sister considered for her 2nd child - again a boy. If I was to have listened to everyone who had an opinion on the naming of my 2 they wouldn't have names even now - and 1 of them is at School!!

SoupDragon · 14/01/2004 10:01

DS2 goes to swimming lessons and the woman who owns/runs it is an Evy and I've never thought it an odd name for an adult. What a ridiculous thing to say!

WSM · 14/01/2004 10:04

What perculiar people you have encountered Jenn ! Evie is gorgeous ! I am called Luci and people ALWAYS assume it is short for Lucille/Lucinda because of the spelling (the 'i'. To be honest it has never bothered me, I always felt that they were a bit odd to want to know !

Next time, tell them to p1$$ off

ThomCat · 14/01/2004 10:05

WHAT! It's a LOVELY name and I mean that sincerely. What on earth are people talking about - silly idiots. Stuff them. You liked it, everyone who posted here likes it , everyone else can pee off! If I have another girl I like the name Edie btw.

WSM · 14/01/2004 10:05

Sorry, thant rogue 'winky' should have been a )

Browbeaten · 14/01/2004 10:10

Thomcat, yes that's a lovely name also. It's odd how these people feel they can comment and if you said well your name is gross they would be offended. My mil can't understand why no-one named their dd's after her as though her name is wonderful - it ain't I can assure you.

Angeliz · 14/01/2004 10:13

I think it's GORGEOUS, Eve was on my list for girls but my mam wouldn't let me as my dad had a girlfriend named Eve35 years ago before they met
No honest JennH, it' a lovely name.
People can be SO insensitive!!!!

Stargazer · 14/01/2004 10:27

Hi JennH

I think Evie is a lovely name and I'm sure your little girl will love it. It will not sound silly on an adult, indeed I had a friend whose name was Eve and we all called her Evie - so don't worry.

Anyway, you never know she may end up calling herself something entirely different when she's a teenager

DSW · 14/01/2004 10:51

I think Evie is a beautiful name - don't take any notice of other peoples insensitive comments!! I remember when my DD was first born and people asked her name I always had to repeat it, and even a close friend of my DP's said "Oh - what did you call her that for?" I still haven't forgotten that.

bundle · 14/01/2004 10:56

I think it's a lovely name, I know a couple too. she can always 'shorten' it to Eve if she feels she wants a different sound to her name when she grows up

aloha · 14/01/2004 11:13

Thomcat, is that after Edie Sedgwick?

Blackduck · 14/01/2004 11:43

'Did I make a mistake..' in short, no. As people here have said, naming raises all sorts of issues/questions/problems. You chose a lovely name, a name you liked. My name is shorten too - only my family (mum/dad/brothers) call me by my full name - used to pee my mum off no end that everyone else shorten it, so there's no winning! Evie is NOT a nickname, nicknames are things like Blackduck! My dad isn't overly keen on my ds's name - tough luck, me and dp liked it and chose it....

lazyeye · 14/01/2004 11:45

I like Edie and Ada - my mates p**d themselves laughing when I said them & told me to get it straight into rollers and slippers. The cheek.

I don't care I don't care, I'll call me children...........anywhere.
