Did i make a mistake?

Hi. I know this is a silly thing to worry about, but well i worry.

I named my baby Evie, and everybody keeps commenting on how awful it is that she does not have a proper name. When people ask her name and i say Evie they always ask what is it short for and are surprised when it is not short for anything.
Even my mum says i should have called her Eve or Evelyn, but we didn't really like those names. She says in the future Evie will feel stupid because she only has a nickname.

But i like her name a lot, i am called Jennifer and everybody calls me Jenn, so i didn't think it mattered.

Have i made a mistake? I nearly cried when somebody told me Evie would sound silly on an adult.

I think Evie is a lovely name too. I knew the same Evey that Soupy mentions below and she always seemed like a lovely person too - and no I didn't think it was an odd name for an adult either. I have an unusual first name and am forever asked to repeat it - but I love the uniqueness of my name and at school (and even at work) I like the fact it is unique - even when it is shortened. Ignore those insensitive people.

My grandmother was called Evelyn, but everyone always called her Evie, right into her nineties. She was very beautiful and glam and Evie suited her perfectly as an adult. I think it's a beautiful name.

Aloha - no hon', I just really like the name Edie. And if I like Edie I'm going to like Evie too. My friend called her baby girl Olive and while I didn't think to myself 'ohh, how wonderful I just adore that name' i did think ' fantastic, great name that really suits the personality of the mother and the look of this newborn little girl'. It just really worked for them.

knew I knew the name. I know the swimming evie (spelling as well). Ds1 used to go.

prettycandles · 14/01/2004 15:09

Oh tosh! My name sounds like a nickname, and I'm always being asked what it stands for, and it's great to say that it's my proper name! I've never been teased for that - on the contrary, people always seem to think that it's special. It was in fact my nickname, which I was always called by, and I changed my name by deed-poll to make my nickname my formal passport name.

suzywong · 14/01/2004 15:17

Evie is a cool name, very cool.

I agree that kids grow into their names and carry them off, but IME it is a drag to have name that is hard to spell or has many different spellings, that's the only thing.

clairabelle · 14/01/2004 15:54

I think Evie is lovely I always think of the younger daughter in the House of Elliot ( v. chic) I've loved it since I heard it on there. I know how you feel though my dd is Poppy ( pre Jamie Oliver) when she was born my gran said never mind she can always call herself Olivia( her middle name) when she's older! I also was informed the other day it was a very self limiting name career wise as she could hardly be a barrister or police inspector with a name like that! we chose it purely becos we both loved it and it was v.unusal 4 yrs ago( now 43rd)

JennH · 14/01/2004 16:07

Thanks everyone its nice to hear that some people appreciate what a spunky name Evie is. I know i am silly, its just you know everyone seems to know best when it comes to Evie and her name is a sensative subject because we found it hard choosing a girls name we both liked a lot.
Oh and if she had been a boy she was going to be Elliot!

MY DD WAS NEARLY CALLED EVIE!!!!!!!

I think it's lovely and still wish I had called her that. I am truly jealous.

Northerner · 14/01/2004 16:41

BTW my dh is a Jamie and not a James. This caused uproar in his family when he was born. His gran said he would never have a 'proper' career as a solicitor/doctor etc cause of his name. Perhaps she was right, he's a chef ...................

Hulababy · 14/01/2004 16:42

I gather not THE Jamie???

One of my dearest friends (aged 26) is called Yvonne, the first thing she does on meeting anyone is to say "please call me Yvie/Evie", she says it makes her feel more glam and interesting - it suits her beautifully (as she actually is glam and interesting!!!)
Just ignore the rude comments you received - they are not worth worrying about.

aloha · 14/01/2004 20:33

Thomcat, ah but Edie Sedgwick had the most amazing legs. Sigh. Pity about the heroin habit, though.
It's short for Edith, I think. Which is also a nice name IMO.

handlemecarefully · 14/01/2004 21:26

Next time somebody says something like that to you sock it to them between the eyes with a really rude crushing retort!

Btw I genuinely like Evie and I'm not just saying this just to make you feel better

stupidgirl · 14/01/2004 21:54

I love Evie, Eve was one of the names on my shortlist, only rejected because I din't think it went well with my surname.

My dd also has a name which has 'ie' at the end, so is often considered not a proper name. I like it, and it suits her.

jasper · 14/01/2004 22:41

It's a beautiful name.

fio2 · 14/01/2004 23:05

There is a little girl next door to us called evie and I think it is a lovely name. My dd has a shortened name for a bigger name

Ailsa · 14/01/2004 23:50

My DD1's best friend at nursery was called Evie, nothing at all wrong with the name, they went through nursery together, went to separate schools and went to the same after school club until it closed down.

moominmama86 · 15/01/2004 10:40

Evie is a really gorgeous name - ignore silly people

My ds is Ben, but it drives me nuts when people assume he's 'really' Benjamin. If he's been a girl he would have been Edie, after my grandma who was an Edith - so I guess I've got a thing about short names!
