i live on a very hard water area and after 18 month of washing the nappies are getting a bit crispy, any ideas of how to get the lime(? or whatever it is that makes them hard) out of them?

A slosh of white vinegar instead of softener?? perhaps.
Soda crystals in the soap dispenser.

next time you wash your nappies if its raining hang them out on the line. Rainwater softens the nappies. Sounds bizarre but it does actually work!

Also try occasionally washing them at 60 degrees without any detergent, as the detergent can build up in them over time.
