What to dress baby in when out and about in carrier?

I have just splashed out on a beco Gemini and I'm desperate to use it but I don't know what LO should wear when we're outside in the cold. Obviously a snow suit is too hot but normal clothes won't be enough.

My DS used to wear tights and trousers with an extra pair of socks, normal clothes and a fleece jumper over the top or coat

Baby legwarmers are Also excellent for adding an extra layer in carriers or backpacks. Amazon have some nice ones

Tights on my son were good to prevent draughts between socks and trousers. Then normal warm clothes and a hatI also used to wear one of dh's cardis or jackets done half up the baby carrier to keep snuggly

Atm dd is wearing normal clothes plus coat and hat. Those fleece babygros are good as a lighter weight alternative to a snowsuit. About 3 quid from Primark. Leg warmers also v cheap on eBay.

I use a snowsuit (although a reasonably lightweight one) over normal clothes or a fleecy sleepsuit over normal clothes when it's not so cold.

A MAM sling cover is fantastic - I can't recommend it highly enough. Waterproof, windproof, lined with fleece, it goes over the whole sling, legs and all, and has fleecy pockets for you to put your hands in. It's brilliant - warm, cosy, convenient. DS was living in his sling two winters ago when it was freezing for days on end and I swear it kept him alive.

You may be surprised how toasty you both are, in my experience it's just hands and legs that need extra attention. Arms usually have multiple layers on already (long sleeved bodysuits are good).

So:
Baby legwarmers
Lined trousers, longer than usual so they don't scrunch up leaving bare legs
Welly-type long socks
Mittens with some sort of clip fastening
A smile!

I put dd (9 months) in longsleeved vest and top plus a jumper then tights and trousers plus sheepskin lined booties (twinkletoes ebay shop £1.99 brilliant!) and hat. I find jumpers with hoods better as they protect the back of her neck from cold winds.

I can button my large fleece or thick maternity coat over her if it is really cold.

You can get baby wearing fleece jumpers with special hole and hood for baby on ebay for £25 that can be used for back carry (might invest in one myself now dd is getting heavier so I can back carry). Also several sellers on ebay do very cheap leg warmers and woolly leggings.

I never got this quite sussed when my son was little, but I think that either a very thin snowsuit or a carrier-cover is the way to go.

It also depends on the sling. I thought that the Bjorn sling we had could be particularly hot and tight, whereas the Rose and Rebellion we moved onto was much better.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I've been inspired and started knitting a pair of leg warmers for DD!

Next do lovely fleece sleepsuits with feet in. very snuggly and less faffy than a coat.

Also wanted to ask - DD is 7 weeks old. When I put her in the beco her legs seem quite far apart, I have put it on the narrower base like it says in the instructions. Is this normal? Does she need to grow a bit bigger? It just looks a little uncomfortable at the moment.

They are meant to be in order to achieve the m position see here.

It's actually good for their hips for their legs to be spread wide. They should also be sitting on their bottoms in any carrier, not dangling by the pelvis (this is the downside of the Baby Bjorn - too easy to put them in it wrong).

YY to legs spread wide. They should look like they are straddling a horse. Crotch danglers are not good for a baby's hips.

Lots of layers and definitely leg warmer to stop the draughts up their legs. Be warned you may get the bug; I still "wear" 16mo DS2.
