Starting on solids.

Hello.

My DD is 6 months old and we've just started introducing solids. She has four milk feeds a day, 180ml at 7am, 11:30am, 4pm and 8pm. She developed this routine on her own. She's been having porridge (well baby rice type stuff) with her morning milk because she's always very hungry then. Her last feed is always just milk.

With the two feeds in between. Should I give her milk AND solids, or space them out so she has milk, then a little bit later some solids? If so how much solids?

xx

Hey, I think the guidelines actually say to give milk before solids since milk is supposed to be their main source of nutrition and solids are more for experiencing new tastes until they are about 1...

With your routine I would do solids at 8am, 12.30pm and around 6pm.

My baby is a massive eater and has been on solids for a couple of weeks now, he is now 6 months and has baby porridge for breakfast, then about 6 ice cubes of fruit purée for lunch and then about 6 ice cubes of savoury purée (mixed with fruit for sweetness) for dinner. I always give him a few sips of juice with his meals too so he doesn't get constipated.

When he first started solid he only had about 2 ice cubes worth (obviously defrosted!) and has just gotten hungrier greedier ever since!

He still drinks about 33 -35 ounces of milk a day too....

My baby is 7 months - what I do is offer solids about one hour after a milk feed usually 3 times a day. So if he is up for the day at 7, I give him breakfast at about 8. Any earlier and he isn't interested at all, and obviously I want him to have had his milk first so that I know he is getting enough.
