Not sure what is wrong ... very worried.

Hello

My son is 11 months old. About 3 months ago, he had a serious throat infection - it was a week after he started nursery. There were puss bags and high temperature. He was given antibiotics for 10 days and it cleared up. Fast forward to two weeks ago and he had a high temperature (which lasted for 3 days) and red throat AND red ears. Doctor again gave antibiotics. This time for 5 days. However, took him back 5 days later to check whether everything was fine and guess what, they saw red throat with puss bags and still red ears.

At this point I asked the doctor how can his throat be worse after the 5 days of antibiotics. No sensible answer was given. Anyway, they gave a 10 day course of another antibiotics to fight off the sore throat with puss bags and red ears. The 10 days ended on Saturday.

Went for a check up today and apparently his throat and ears are still red. No sensible explanation from the doctor. I was told let's just monitor it.

However, I feel that surely something is not right. He has been on antibiotics for 15 days and his throat and ears are still red? I am going to try to see a different doctor but I am so worried.

Anyone has any idea as to what the problem might be. He does not have a fever right now. So I guess that is a good sign. He had a cold about 2 weeks ago.

Thanks for any advice.

Hi mo,

Poor love it sounds like a tough few weeks for you and your lo.

Some infections are more powerful than the doctor realises, and need an extension to the days of antibiotics. It is a shame that your gp has not given you a clear explanation, but it sounds like your gp thinks there is no longer any infection. I would say your lo is probably a bit vulnerable just now, and I would monitor closely, and not expose to any cold, draught or infection.

Is this all the same doctor??? Is it all at the GPs surgery ? Have no experience of this but if you are not happy and your 'mummy instinct' is telling you otherwise then look for a second opinion. Have you spoken to your HV? Is there a walk in centre you can go to? Ring NHS direct ans see what advice they have. I think I would be worried too in your shoes. It's hard to say more as I have not experienced this but I agree that it does seem along time to still be going on. At the worst you could go to casualty and see what they say - know it may not be an emergency but it is a little one and I am sure they would understand your justified anxiety.

Thanks All. Brought him back to the doctors today. Saw a different doctor (the senior partner) who took his time to exam my little boy. He said there is no redness in the throat or ears.

So I am wondering what on earth was all that about with the other doctor yesterday.
