I am so confused about the child benefit changes!

I am currently a single sahm on benefits so this shouldn't effect me right now but in January I am moving in with my new partner. He is not the father of my 2 DDs.
He earns £50k ish - which is because he works his arse off with overtime. His basic pay isn't much more than £30k ish.

We are also expecting our first baby together.

I have no clue what's happening with this. Does the fact he earns that effect the CB I get for my 2 DDs? Or is it their Dad? Who is an arse and doesn't even pay maintenance.

This Child benefit is the only income I will have that doesn't come from my new partner. He is happy to support us but I would love to have SOMETHING that I can actually have coming in myself.

Yes, I think it will affect your CB if his income is over £50k. My understanding is that you will either have to give up your CB altogether or your partner will have to fill out a self assessmnent tax return form every year in which he will have to declare the CB element of your household income.

This return will determine how much extra tax he will have to pay in return for you recieving CB. The amount he will have to pay will increase along with his income.

If he earns just over £50k, it might be worth working out if its better to NOT do some of the over time to keep him under the £50k threshold so you can continue to recieve your CB.

But keep claiming, because it will protect your NI status for pension etc in the future.

I spoke to my partner and he said what I thought he would say - he doesn't want anybody messing around with his tax and that it all sounds too complicated.

I don't really know enough about it to say otherwise. What effect does not having the NI contributions have? I will probably be looking for part time work in about a year - so does this make a difference?

And I was under the impression it was a £40k limit? If it's £50k we may be OK. His last p60 was over £50k but not by much and he has done less overtime this year.

I am so confused/stressed about it - paperwork is really not my thing!

Lillly I'm in a similar position in that I am not above the £50k earnings limit and I am the CB claimant but I suspect my DHwill be, depending on what his bonus is this year and whether he gets promoted.

I have claimed on the understanding that he will fill in a self assessment tax return if his earnings go over £50k. However my understanding is that if your DP is not prepared to fill in a tax return and will be over £50k earnings you should not claim CB as this could be benefit fraud and/or tax evasion.

If your partner won't fill in a tax return and his earnings are likely to be in excess of 50k then you shouldn't claim.

Not claiming effects your NI contributions and therefore your right to a state pension in the future.

I hope given that you personally will be financially worse off as a result of moving in with him his money will be your money
