Dd was up in the night with a temp - is ok but a bit whingey, calpol is helping. I'm pretty sure it's earache but I'm not sure if ears in general need a doctor's attention, or will calpol and cuddles do the trick?

My DD (20 months) had an ear infection last week and the only symptom was the temperature. If you're worried its probably worth going to see someone at a walk in centre. My DD needed antibiotics and they worked really quickly and she perked right up. Apparently ear infections in children under 2 pretty much always need antibiotics to clear. HTH

Usually GPs won't prescribe antibiotics or ear infections unless its been there at least 5 days. So unless there is swelling, redness of outer ear, pus coming out, or you're worried, I'd just sit it out.
Ibuprofen really helps too.
Hope your dd feels better soon.
