I dont know what to do or what to think.

This morning when changing my sons nappy i noticed blood, but it wasnt from him bum it was from his other bits, he had a big streak of like slimey stuff coming out of his penis and there was blood. I changed him and called the doctors who told me to go in at 12pm, before i went i checked his nappy and he'd had a tiny wee and there was blood in it.

The doctor checked him over, including his bits and said she couldnt see any cuts or signs if infection, felt his stomach and everything and he was in no discomfort, she rang Paediatrics at the hospital who said they wanted a sample of it and could i get to the hospital, i couldnt get there, so she gave me a sample pot and told me to try and get a sample next time he wee's.

Got home and changed him and he'd had a wee, but no sign of blood. Sat for an hour holding the pot to his bits waiting for him to wee, he didnt. Went and picked oldest up from school then when we got home he'd wee'd in his nappy, again no blood, ive spent most of the afternoon holding the pot waiting and he wont pee.

So i called doctor back, and she said if i couldnt get one id have to take him to hospital tomorrow, but that it was a good sign that there'd been no more blood.

But ive spent most of the day in tears, worried sick that something is seriously wrong, what i saw this morning is not normal, and its obviously something internal, i dont know what to do. He's sleeping now, going to wake him at 10 for a bottle and try and get a sample then. He seems fine, his normal smiley self, but im so worried :(

You poor thing, I have no experience of this, but you sound as though you have been through the mill. Hopefully you will manage to get the sample, (this is a pain).

It is really scary when things like this happen. Hope it gets sorted soon.

Its so hard to get a sample! My DD didn't wee for 5 hours once whilst we were there in the hospital hovering around her with this pot!

How old is he? Its scary when you don't know what's wrong, it's definitely good that it hasn't happened again but don't let them fob you off at the hospital tomorrow.

I hope its nothing serious and it gets sorted quickly. :)

He's nearly 7 months :(

He doesnt seem to be in any pain, he's a happy baby, but blood in urine is never good, so i dont know what slime and blood instead of urine means, my poor little man :(

Ok, this works better for a dd than a ds, but it is worth a go. You need a lump of cotton wool and a syringe (no needle obviously) Put the cotton wool in nappy near/on/round penis. When he wees the cotton wool will be wet, then you can syringe up the wee from the wet cotton wool

It could just be an infection of some kind? He may just need some anti bacs :)

If you still struggle to get a sample, you should be able to get a bag from your GP that sticks on with his penis through a hole.

Good luck :)

Faverolles - they didnt have any of those bags at my GP's surgery, the doctor went looking for them and there was none, thats how i ended up with sample pots.

Well he's just been fed so im sat here holding the pot waiting...

Put him in a warm bath with the pot on his bits - sure fire way to get a sample. The warm water stimulates their pee reflex. I am sure, as the others have said, there is nothing to worry about but I hope it gets sorted soon x

Was it fresh red blood or old blood? I had something similar with 3.5 year old DS last week. He had a slight milky discharge and then on a couple of occasions he had a small amount of what looked like dark red slimy blood. Like you I was terrified but it turned out to be balanitis - which is very common in under 4's and normally easily treatable. The doctor prescribed a steroid cream which cleared it up within about 5-7 days. Fwiw, the only other symptom DS had was a slight redness on the tip of his penis.

If you google balanitis it doesn't actually mention blood but does say can cause small cuts and scabbing etc, so presumably that could account for a small amiunt of dried blood?

It may not be this but just wanted to reassure you that it doesn't have to be anything sinister.
