Boring boring - toy organisation

DS has lots of toys - far too flipping many and many are duplicated eg 2 shape sorters, 3 pull along wooden animals, enormous number of cars...

At the moment some are kept in a chest downstairs, most are in his room and I'd like to be able to rotate round so he doesn't always have the same thing out. So how do you organise that?

Is it better/easier to have a box of cars, box of musical instruments etc or try to separate out 2/3 collections of various toys and rotate round bedroom/downstairs/storage? And what do you do about books?

IKEA is good for cheap storage

We have billy bookcases in the bedrooms, and Trofast storage downstairs

I think it's nicer to have a box of cars, box of instruments, box of lego etc. so that they know where to go looking when they want something.

I have organised on themes. Farm toys box, seaside toys box, garage toys box, etc. I keep them in the garage and change the toy selection every week. Special toys and books are kept out all the time.

Same - boxes or drawers:

Dinosaurs
Animals
People/figures
Cars
Farms

I think the best thing for books, but I don't have one, is the "flat front facing" thing that shows the covers, not the spines.

That's it - easier to tidy away, easier for other people to tidy away, avoids boxes and baskets filled with broken bits of crap and "miscellaneous"

But, if you're rotating, then mixing up might be better, but still separated out into themes.

Should totally be working, but somehow this was more interesting :-)
