What am I doing wrong with my bambino nappies?

I am having to change my 10 week old about once an hour to stop the nappy wraps becoming wet and soaking his clothes. Is this normal with bambino nappies. I am getting through more washing than I know what to do with! Also using terries with motherease wraps which seems to work better. Anyone come across this problem, or know what I am doing wrong?

Are you nippaing (sic) they nappies? I believe you can do something along the same lines as a terry sim. to the poocatcher fold (the nappy lady has pcitures of good terry and prefold folds to try).

I've not used prefolds (just terries and shaped) but it could be he's weeing very "directionally" IYKWIM and is flooding one particular area - if you can nippa or pin them, this will give a snug fit and hopefully give the prefold a chance to catch the wee. If you are using ME Rikki wraps you could try using these with the prefolds too to see it worked better?

Is your baby a boy or a girl? How are you folding them? Where abouts are they leaking, out of the front or the sides?

don't think i made myself very clear. i've got the popper type motherease wraps which i think are fantastic and work really well with terry nappies.
The bambino nappies are what I am having a problem with. the bambino "nappy" section only fits in a bambino wrap. The bambino wraps don't seem waterproof which seems to defeat the whole point of having them. I have a boy and am folding the bambino nappy in at the top to create more material where it is needed (so to speak) and then folding them in to thirds to fit into the wrap. Bought them second hand so don't have any instructions. a friend of mine has the same problem and has given up on using reuseables completely which is such a shame.

Hi there,
I am wondering if you are using a nappi nippa on the terries, if so, you could use it on the prefolds as well and then use the ME wrap over them.
I haven't used the bambino mio wrap, so can't comment. I use cotton bottoms wraps with shaped nappies and also over prefolds, and they work very well. It might be worth buying a cotton bottoms wrap from ebay, as they are made to use with prefolds, so you could carry on padfolding (as you are doing) but the cotton bottoms wrap should be more reliable. It will definately hold a padfolded prefold in place better than an airflow, which is going to be too loose.

yes, I use a nippa on the terries, couldn't face using a nappy pin. I only have three ME wraps, and tend to get through them very quickly with a ten week old and the amount he poo's! thats why i bought the bambino's, but I wish I had spent the money on more wraps now!
Do you use your cotton bottom nappy's at night as well. I have always used a nature nappy at night, but would really like to move away from disposables completley. Am not sure what would hold all that pee for ten hours though which is what he is sleeping for now. Still can't get over the fact that ten week old babies do that. Took me two years to get my first ds to sleep past 4 in the morning!

I used BM until my dd was about the same age. I never had the problem you mention. Could it be that the wraps are not waterproof anymore? Since you say they're second hand, they may have reached their life expectancy. Might be worth investing in a brand new one just to check.

jerikaka · 28/03/2006 14:41

The lady I bought them off said that they were only used a few times, and I must say they don't look very used. I will try and find a local retailer though and have a look at them.

Also, make sure that his vest doesn't press too much against the wrap. I had this problem.

jerikaka · 28/03/2006 15:07

i hadn't thought about that. thanks! they do get a bit tight over reuseable nappy's, don't they?!

Haha Jerikaka, you must be in shock about the 10 hour sleep! Grin
I don't use prefolds at night now with my 16 month old, but not for any particular reason, as it's perfectly possible.
I used to put them on my ds for night, I placed the prefold and a hemp booster inside one of the disana tie-on nappies, we either used a large cotton bottoms wrap or a wool wrap with it, and it went the night.
There's another post \link{http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk?topicid=1800&threadid=158179&stamp=060328090237\here} from a lady who has cotton bottoms prefolds: I put on a couple of links to websites where there are photos of nappi nippa'd prefold, I used to use the newspaper or angelwing fold on my ds.
Oh and the vest thing, you need to go up to 6-9 months or something for nights.
I've got ds in 18-24 for nights. Smile

I used BM's for a while with DD1, but didn't really think much of them TBH. Don't use prefolds for DD2, just terry squares and shaped nappies and loads of different wraps, each one good for different times. You can buy vest extenders from www.kittykins.co.uk I think they are about £4 for a pack of 3 and they are probably one of the best things I've ever bought, DD2 can still wear newborn (she's 10weeks)
