do you hand down shoes to siblings?

I have received the wisdom that you don't put children in second hand shoes. But I have a whole box of shoes that DD1 wore for about 2 seconds & then grew out of, & DD2 about to start needing shoes. What's the consensus? It feels more acceptable than it would do buying them off eBay but is it going to bugger her feet?

I do if they haven't been worn much and they are soft leather so not likely to be too shaped to the first foot. My dds have similar wide, high instepped feet though, which helps. And I spend a small fortune on their shoes so am loth to throw them out.

I hand down plimsoles, wellies, slippers crocs, trainers but not "proper" shoes - have no idea why except I suppose that I always get them fitted (and they are darned expensive!) and they wear them a lot so they feet sort of mould into them.

I do, if they fit ok and don't look too crappy. Crocs always get handed down, as do wellies if they have no leeks.
Tbh my dc are a nightmare with shoes and usually wreck them.
I wouldn't do it for a first pair of shoes, but from 2 years or so I do.

I do, but get her measured first. When their feet are tiny anyway, and the shoes do not get much wear. I would rather put her in second hand clarkes than cheap supermarket shoes. Once they start school, the shoes are unlikely to be salvageable unless fancy best ones.

yes. The clarks woman frowned and gave me the 'shoes mould the feet' talk, but ds2 was wearing lightweight trainers.
The guy in the shoe shop was o.k about me asking if ds2 could wear ds1's startrite school shoes from last year.

I don't, only because DS would never wear DD's shoes!

I have done if we have a pair that have been hardly worn and seem to fit well. I've even been known to go into clarks and ask to have the fit checked

(disclaimer: they were clarks shoes bought earlier in the year)

I am wondering how to get my boy to wear his sisters shoes. I could dye them, but what about the flowers?

Yes sometimes. Dd1 is very kind to her shoes and there's often a bit of wear left in them for dd2; casual shoes or boots mainly. Just as well it's that way around cos dd2 annhialates her shoes and no way could anyone use them again after her.

They always have new school shoes of their own though.

Yes, ds (22 months) wears lots of hand me down shoes and i often buy second hand shoes. Hasn't affected his movements yet, nor did it affect his brothers who is now 12!

School shoes I don't. Apart from the fact that I don't think any pair of my dcs' shoes have ever been fit for wearing after they've finished with them, it's the fact that they spend all day, 5 days a week in them, so if they didn't fit well, I worry they might be damaging their still growing feet.
Everything else I do though - trainers, wellies, walking boots, sandals, "going out shoes", pumps (school and fashion), flip flops, sandals, football boots, flippers! . Be massively expensive not to.

DD has never spent much time in her shoes - at home they're either barefoot or in wellies - so I've passed down her StartRite ones to DS (she's always had boys's shoes because I can't be doing with pink and she's not into it either). But she's starting nursery school now and I expect her to be wearing them a lot more so probably won't pass this set down. Wellies, Crocs and anything else gets handed down.

School shoes get destroyed, other things get handed down.

Especially trainers as DD1 hates them. She has to have them for PE and some Guide things, but still wears her crocs and gets scowled at instead.

Therefore, we ended up with about 4 pairs of hardly worn ones.

I do. Ds3 also gets shoes passed down from cousin and good friend. We use them all!

The mum of a friend of mine is the youngest of 7 and always wore hand me down shoes. Her feet are really deformed and grim and she attributes it to this fact (tho it may be coincidence).

Anyway, no, I hand on wellies (not that we wear them now) and things like school trainers that were worn about 3 times, but not everyday shoes and trainers. My DC only have two pairs of footwear as a rule anyway so they tend to trash them.

DD1 had these boots two years ago and they are still in great condition. DD2 would fit them now, but I wondered if I shouldn't pass them on (don't normally) but it seems such a shame as they are in really good condition and were v expensive (bought by PIL, I always buy their shoes in the sale).

I wondered if I maybe bought some new insoles for them they'd be ok? Would you do it?

Yes, wellies, sandals, trainers (unless minging) footi boots etc.
Not school shoes. They're ususally not fit anyway!

Yes, if they are not battered/really well worn. Sometimes you buy them and then they have a growth spurt and they hardly get any wear out of them. I am also wearing DS's hand nw down converse

There was a phase when DS1's feet were growing so quickly that he needed new shoes every three months. So then yes, I did especially for trainers. Not for school shoes. They are too worn. Sandals yes, wellies, winter boots (they don't wear them enough to wear out)

Yes DD2 wears DD1's wellies, crocs etc.

Main clarks shoes depends if they are the right size or not. If I find a pair of DD1's old 5E for example and DD2 is the same now then why not as long as they are in good condition.
DD2 is always trying to wear DD1's shoes whatever the size!
