Being a good loser

Any ideas how to deal with ds (6) when he loses a game or doesn't come out on top in a particular situation? I realize this is something a lot of children his age struggle with. He gets really, really upset by the idea that he won't always be the one to get a sticker in class (or whatever). I tried to get him to enter a competition but he said that so many other people would be entering it that he would never win so there was no point (he sent a photo into a Lego magazine last year which didn't get printed and he's never forgotten it). I have been trying to offer some comfort and encourage him but also feel ultimately that this is just life and he is going to have to get on with it.

Anyone else experience this and how do you approach it?

We were playing snakes and ladders 2day and this issue came up wif my dsd 4 yo bless she cudnt understand why she always wins at mummy's house but didn't 2day sting with me and her dad I was a bit flustered but we played on and when dad won we cheered (led by me) and yo-hoed for him and the same for me and for when dsd won not sure if this will work long term but for the nxt few weeks we're gonna keep playing board games and using this technique to see if it helps! I'll be glad to read other answers too!

Thanks upanddown. We've done a similar thing with games, saying well done to people, except he tends to say it very crossly and then run off! When we watched the Olympics we talked about what athletes did when they came second, or last, or made a mistake - we noticed that none of them ran off screaming or hitting their brother ;-) But he's said "Why should I be pleased for other people when they win - am I supposed to like them better than myself?!"
